This pregnant lady was begging on the street. She looked so frightened and sad. A man then decided to follow her. He was so shocked when he saw this.
“Stop! Stay right where you are!” Marcus yelled to the boy in the middle of the road. His heart skipped as he watched cars pass the boy, missing him only by inches. The little boy stood there in fear, trembling and crying for his mother.
Marcus ran into the road and scooped the boy away just as a truck came towards them, its horn blaring in alarm. He ran to the sidewalk with the boy in his arms. He was finally safe. Passersby who had witnessed the scene in horror let out sighs of relief when the boy was rescued from the traffic. Some of them commended Marcus for his quick thinking and bravery.
His heart still pounding, Marcus carried the boy up the hill to his frightened mother, Lisa Morris. She rushed towards them, tears falling down her cheeks. She took her son from his rescuer and hugged him tightly. Her hands trembled as she searched his body for any injuries.
She only started to relax when she saw none. The boy was still crying, so she carried him in her arms and led him into the tent to calm him down. She tucked him into a blanket and stroked his head until his cries died down and he finally fell asleep. She looked at his sleeping figure with a sigh before stepping out of the tent. She saw that the man who had saved her son was still outside, waiting for her, and that was when she remembered her manners.
She walked up to him and took his hands. “Thank you so much for saving Jamie, sir. I’m so sorry for the trouble,” she told him with a grateful look in her eyes.
Marcus only nodded. He searched the woman’s face and wondered how she and her son had ended up in a place like that. That was the last place a pregnant woman like her should live. Lisa Morris was a young black woman in her 30s. She was very beautiful and looked younger than her age, even with one child and the one growing in her belly. Lisa had only been introduced to the life of poverty and helplessness recently. She had neither a job nor a house to live in. Lisa never thought she would end up homeless and alone. Her ex-husband was the sole reason for that outcome.
When Lisa got married to Dean, they were deeply in love with each other. “The perfect couple” was what people used to say when they saw the two together. They cherished each other very much and enjoyed life as a newly married couple for a while. Lisa never imagined that the change that was supposed to bring happiness to their lives would actually become the source of her suffering.
Their perfect relationship started to turn sour when Lisa fell pregnant for the first time. Dean began to behave strangely, drawing away from home and avoiding his wife. Lisa was worried about this, but whenever she tried to ask Dean what the problem was, he would wave it off and steer the subject in another direction. This went on for a few months, and Lisa was losing her patience with him. One night, she decided she was going to get answers one way or another, so she waited up for Dean until he returned home. When he finally came back, he staggered into the house, clearly drunk.
Annoyed and perplexed at this sudden development, Lisa questioned him about his behavior. She asked him why he had changed so much ever since she got pregnant. His reply left Lisa speechless. Dean let out a laugh and looked at her growing belly with disappointment and disgust. He exploded and yelled at her, saying it was because he was no longer in love with her.
He never wanted children; they would just be a nuisance and disrupt their relationship. He admitted he didn’t feel attracted to her anymore and wanted to be far from her. Lisa gaped at him as each sentence flew from his mouth.
She tried to process what she had just heard. She couldn’t believe the man she had fallen in love with and gotten married to could spew out such vile and hurtful things. Besides, he had never told her he didn’t want kids while they were dating. Why was he suddenly mentioning all this? She thought he was trying to use the silly excuse to cover up the real reason behind his behavior.
“Are you cheating on me, Dean? Just tell me the truth and stop with all these flimsy excuses!” she spat back at him. By then, she was crying. She gently grabbed his collar and continued questioning him. She was absolutely heartbroken. Dean tried to get Lisa to let go of his collar, but she held on tightly. He got irritated, and with one hard push, she was shoved to the ground with force. He mumbled a few words before leaving her on the floor and disappearing into his room.
Lisa remained on the floor, crying and in pain. After some time, she managed to stand up and went to her room to take painkillers her doctor had prescribed for her. She cried herself to sleep in her bedroom, all alone and confused, but she could hardly get enough sleep. She kept turning on the bed in discomfort. She was lost in thought as she pondered the reason why Dean had said all those things that night.
By the next morning, she had convinced herself that Dean didn’t mean what he said. After all, he was drunk. She figured he was most likely overwhelmed by the thought of becoming a parent and wasn’t taking it well. He just needed time to adjust. The couple went on with their lives as if that night never happened. Neither of them spoke of it ever again, and Lisa’s baby kept growing as the months went by.
When she finally gave birth to their son, Jamie, Lisa was filled with extreme joy. When the little bundle of joy was handed to her, she noticed that Dean didn’t look too thrilled seeing the infant. He didn’t even want to hold his son and only seemed to care about leaving the hospital as soon as possible. This behavior continued at home.
Dean would act like Jamie didn’t exist and hardly paid any attention to Lisa. He left Lisa to do all the work and didn’t change like she thought he would. She was confused and worried about their son. Would he be able to have a relationship with his father? For three years, Lisa took care of Jamie like she was a single mother, even though her husband was present.
Dean was always out of the house and didn’t care to see his son. Lisa knew she had lost the man she fell in love with all those years ago. He only gave Lisa the money she needed to take care of Jamie, but acted like Jamie wasn’t his own flesh and blood.
Lisa learned to deal with this and got used to it. Jamie grew up calling his father “sir,” and this broke Lisa’s heart each time. She was tasked with playing the role of a mother as well as a father. It wasn’t the easiest thing to do, yet Lisa did it with a smile on her face. She had made several attempts to help the father and son bond, but she had come to terms with the fact that Dean simply didn’t want anything to do with his child.
This went on until Lisa became pregnant for the second time. Lisa’s hands trembled as she handed Dean the pregnancy test result. Dean’s face turned beet red with rage.
“You’re pregnant again?” he bellowed, his voice echoing off the walls.
Dean’s anger exploded like a volcano. He tore the paper into shreds, his eyes blazing with fury.
“I can’t do this anymore!” he roared, his voice dripping with venom. “You’re suffocating me!”
With a snarl, Dean grabbed a cup from the dining table and hurled it against the wall, shattering it into a hundred pieces.
“Get out of my sight!” he screamed, his face twisted in disgust.
Lisa’s body shook with sobs as she felt her world crumbling around her. She knew at that moment that their relationship was beyond repair. That week, Dean filed for a divorce. He presented Lisa with the papers when they were ready and told her she had to leave his house. Lisa was devastated and extremely frightened hearing this. She fell to her knees and begged Dean not to do this to them, but Dean had already made up his mind. He was a successful businessman who loved his job more than anything else in the world and didn’t want anything that would distract him from that, especially children. He thought it would just be him and Lisa, but when the kids entered the picture, he decided he couldn’t go on.
Lisa tried to convince him that it wouldn’t be like that at all. After all, she was the one doing the raising, so they wouldn’t be a distraction to him, but all of this fell on deaf ears. Lisa was scared. She had no idea where she was going to go with her son and the child she was expecting.
She had nothing to her name and no job to provide funds. She decided to stand her ground and refused to sign the divorce paper, but Dean, being a powerful person in the state, got the divorce papers signed. By then, he was just irritated by Lisa and told her to leave his house with her children. He refused to give them money to settle down somewhere else, saying it was just a waste of money. He told her that he had already wasted enough on Jamie.
Sadly, Lisa couldn’t fight back. She had no money and no one to support her. Worse off, she didn’t even have the strength to stand up for herself. Lisa left the house broke and with nowhere to go. She had no family in the state to support them; her family all lived outside Florida. She tried contacting a friend of hers and asked to stay with her for a while, but the friend refused out of fear of her own husband. She couldn’t take in a pregnant mother and her son. Lisa tried to look for a job, but no one accepted a
pregnant mother with a three-year-old, especially one who had no home. This led Lisa to resort to begging on the streets.
Every day, she came out on the street, sat on the pavement near a streetlight, and placed a bowl in front of her. Some people passed by without sparing her a second glance. Others were generous enough to drop some coins or even a dollar into the bowl. She used the money she gathered each day to feed herself and her son. Jamie didn’t complain, but Lisa’s heart broke knowing she couldn’t even provide three square meals for her son. She worried about the baby coming and how they were going to survive.
One day, Marcus Weber was walking past the street when he spotted Lisa. He noticed that the pregnant woman was quite beautiful and had a certain aura about her. Curious about her situation, he wanted to know how she ended up there. He was also confused as to why a pregnant woman wasn’t in the comfort of a home taking care of her baby instead of begging for chump change on the street.
He was a journalist who had a great passion for spreading news that people couldn’t reach and was a fighter for justice. He saw Lisa and took an immediate interest in her. Every day as he walked by, he dropped a few dollars in her bowl and gave her a kind smile. Lisa, of course, noticed this kind young man who gave her more money than anyone else had ever given her. She was grateful to him and always returned his smile gratefully.
One day, Marcus walked by later than usual and saw that Lisa was packing up her things. He had a feeling to just watch her from a distance, wondering where she went at the end of each day. When he saw that she was finally leaving, he quietly followed her, keeping a fair distance between them. He was shocked to see that Lisa went into the thicket not far from where they were standing earlier.
He watched her walk up to a tent and crouch down in front of a young boy, whom he figured must be her son. The mother and son talked for a while, and she hugged him with a sad smile. Marcus felt bad for the two, wondering what must have happened to them to end up in a situation like that. He looked at Lisa’s baby bump and was suddenly filled with worry. How was she going to cope when the baby came? He felt an urge to protect the small family and do something for them. He watched for a while longer until he decided it was time to leave. But as he turned to leave, he heard a loud scream from the woman.
He quickly turned back to see the little boy running towards the busy road down the hill. He must have been lost in thought as he didn’t realize that some time had passed by and that the boy had suddenly left his mother’s side. Marcus followed, running as fast as he could. He watched the boy run headfirst into the road and nearly get hit by a car.
People shouted in alarm. Marcus yelled from where he was, telling the boy to stay where he was. He ran towards the little boy standing in the middle of the road and grabbed him just as a truck approached. He carried the boy on his shoulders and ran out of harm’s way, and those who witnessed the scene let out relieved sighs when Marcus got the crying boy back to his mother.
She was also crying and shaking in fear. Lisa took her son from the kind man who had saved him and led Jamie into the tent. Jamie had run into the road because he had suddenly thrown a tantrum and told his mother he wanted to go back to “sir’s” house. He hated this scary place where they lived. When Lisa tried to explain that they couldn’t go back, he got upset and ran away.
Lisa finally emerged from the tent to find Marcus still sitting outside. That was when she recognized him as the kind man who always dropped a generous amount into her bowl. She thanked him for saving Jamie and asked how he had found them. Marcus told her everything, his cheeks flushed in embarrassment. Lisa wasn’t upset with him.
She knew he was a good person, and if he hadn’t been there, who knows what could have happened to Jamie. When he politely and carefully asked her how they had ended up living in a thicket, Lisa told him everything. He was the first person she had talked to about everything since it happened. She told Marcus about her marriage to Dean and how he threw her and Jamie out of the house because she had his children. Marcus was angry and couldn’t believe a father could throw out his wife and child. He was even more determined to find a way to help them.
They talked for a while before Marcus had to leave. Lisa thanked him again for all his kindness, and he departed. Marcus went home, and the pregnant woman and her son stayed on his mind the whole way. When he entered his apartment, he sat down in front of his laptop and decided he was going to write their story. He wrote about Lisa and her son, careful not to reveal too much information.
He emphasized that Lisa should be supported in her time of need. The world needed to protect women from such men. She was pregnant and had nothing—how were she and her children supposed to survive? Marcus finished the article but stared at it for a while. Finally, he posted it and went to bed, the woman still on his mind.
He woke up the next morning to see that the story had blown up. People were clamoring and expressing their anger and pity for Lisa. They started a discussion about ways to help her and eventually opened a GoFundMe account where people from all around the world donated money for the pregnant mother and son.
They wanted Lisa to have her own home where she could take care of her children properly. Some companies even offered to find a place for her to work and earn a living. Marcus was surprised but satisfied seeing the outcome of the article. He couldn’t wait to give the good news to Lisa. He could just imagine the smile on her face.
That afternoon, he couldn’t stop smiling as he walked towards her spot on the road. When he saw her sitting in the scorching sun, he almost shed a tear. This woman’s life was about to be changed. When he told her everything that had happened in those few hours after they had seen each other, Lisa was dumfounded. She thought Marcus was playing a prank on her until he showed her everything on his phone.
She burst into tears, seeing all the encouragement she got from strangers she had never met before in her life. She felt like a heavy weight had been lifted from her shoulders. She had been so worried about the survival of her children. Seeing now that everything would be all right made her weep uncontrollably. Marcus handed her a handkerchief to wipe her tears as tears fell from his own eyes.
“I don’t know what to say to you, Marcus. You’re like an angel sent to save us. I can’t thank you enough for this. Thank you so much, Marcus. I will never forget this,” she told him, her eyes blurred with a fresh set of tears.
Marcus pulled her in for a hug, reassuring her that everything would be fine from then on. The days following this incident were life-changing for Lisa. She was able to rent an apartment for herself and her children. Lisa secured a well-paying job in one of the companies that offered her a position. Three weeks later, Lisa went into labor and gave birth to a beautiful baby girl whom she named Daisy.
She was elated at the arrival of her daughter and couldn’t stop smiling at her little face. Marcus made sure she got everything she needed and even took them home from the hospital. Lisa continued with her life with her kids. She had finally settled down and was now comfortable. Marcus became like family to them, and they all lived happily.
As for Dean, the universe would surely deal with him in a way it deemed fit. After all, karma exists. Besides that, I’m just glad Lisa found her place in life. What do you think about this story?
