President Joe Biden has been criticized by families of soldiers who died in the Afghanistan airport attack, saying he disrespected them by making them wait hours during a ceremony to honor their loved ones.

The event, called a “dignified transfer,” took place at Dover Air Force Base, where the remains of the fallen soldiers were brought back to the U.S. Families claim the delay happened because Biden was sleeping on Air Force One.

On August 26, 2021, a bomb attack by Taliban fighters at Kabul International Airport killed 13 U.S. service members and over 170 Afghans.

The attack occurred during the chaotic last days of the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, which many view as one of the most poorly handled moments in Biden’s presidency.

Roice McCollum, whose brother Rylee was killed in the attack, shared that a military officer told her Biden was taking a nap instead of meeting the grieving families on time.

Roice said this made them wait an extra three hours, adding to their pain and frustration. Darin Hoover, the father of Staff Sgt. Taylor Hoover, and Christy Shamblin, the mother-in-law of Marine Sgt. Nicole Gee, also said they were kept waiting and described the experience as upsetting. Hoover even called the president a “doddering old fool” for his behavior.

The incident isn’t the only reason Biden faced backlash. During the same ceremony, he was seen looking at his watch, which many families took as a sign of disrespect. Although the White House denied that he was napping or being dismissive, they couldn’t erase the anger and sadness felt by the families.

Biden’s handling of the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan has been widely criticized. The process, which marked the end of America’s 20-year war in the country, left many feeling that it was rushed and poorly planned.

While the president has expressed gratitude and respect for the fallen soldiers, calling them “patriots in the highest sense,” his actions during the ceremony left a lasting impression on the grieving families. They believe more care and sensitivity should have been shown during such an emotional and important moment.
