At a Republican policy retreat in Miami, Florida, former President Donald Trump joked about running for a third presidential term and urged GOP lawmakers to work together to pass his agenda.
The retreat, held at Trump’s resort in Miami, focused on how Republicans can overcome internal disagreements to push through key legislation, including Trump’s budget plans. During his speech, Trump joked about using the money he raised during the 2024 election to run again in 2028, even though U.S. presidents are limited to two terms.
“I’ve raised a lot of money for the next race, but I’m not sure if I can use it for myself. I think I’m not allowed to run again,” Trump said, turning to House Speaker Mike Johnson. “Am I allowed to run again, Mike? I better not get you involved in that.”
This isn’t the first time Trump has joked about staying in office longer. Last November, he playfully suggested that Republicans could “change the law” to let him run for a third term. While it was clearly a joke, some Republicans, like Tennessee Rep. Andy Ogles, have proposed changes to allow non-consecutive third terms. However, such a proposal is unlikely to pass.
Trump also stressed the importance of unity among Republicans to pass his priorities, including border security and funding bills. “The Republican Party has to stick together,” he said. “Sometimes a few people don’t want to cooperate, but we just have to get it done.”
The retreat continues as Republicans aim to align their efforts to support Trump’s agenda.
