During his campaign for president, Donald Trump promised he would reduce government spending. But many people are shocked to see how much money has been spent during his first 100 days back in office, especially when compared to the same time last year.

After returning to the White House in January for a second term, Trump said he would make big changes and cut costs. Despite those promises, his administration has actually spent a huge amount of money around \$220 billion more than what was spent during President Biden’s first 100 days the year before, according to CBS News.

In fact, government spending during Trump’s current term is higher than it’s been in the past decade, except for 2021 when the country was dealing with the COVID-19 crisis.

Trump has signed many executive orders since returning to office. One of them even renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. Another major move was getting rid of the Department of Education, which has since led to court cases.

In an effort to make the government more efficient, Trump gave Elon Musk the job of running a new department called the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE.

This group claims to have saved \$170 billion by cutting down on wasteful spending. They say the savings came from selling off assets, cancelling or renegotiating contracts and leases, stopping fraud and improper payments, cancelling certain grants, and trimming the workforce.

However, these savings claims have not been confirmed yet.

Despite the claims of savings, spending has gone up especially in areas like Medicare and Social Security, which cost over \$37 billion more compared to the same time under Biden. Other government departments, including Defense, Veterans Affairs, and Agriculture, have also received more money.

Many people are surprised and disappointed by the large spending. One person commented online, “So much for the government spending cuts.”

To try and save money, the Trump administration has laid off many government workers, including those in the education sector. Trump has defended these firings by saying the government was bloated and needed trimming. He said the goal is to keep only those who are truly dedicated to working for the administration and the country. By the end of March, he mentioned they were getting close to reaching that goal.
