Cop fired after his own bodycam footage catches his affair with married teacher as shocking details emerge

A police officer in Tennessee was fired after his own body camera accidentally exposed a secret romantic relationship he was having with a married elementary school teacher. The officer, Brian Gilley, had been working at Castle Heights Elementary School in Lebanon as part of the D.A.R.E. program, which is meant to teach students about the dangers of drugs and promote good decision-making. Instead of setting a positive example, he became involved in an inappropriate relationship with Shelby Moss, a teacher at the same school.

The entire affair came to light when Gilley’s bodycam, which is typically used to record official police activity for transparency and safety, captured flirty behavior and even a kiss between him and Shelby inside her classroom. The footage shows the two becoming physically affectionate during school hours. At one point, they were seen kissing before a student unexpectedly walked into the room. This interruption didn’t stop their behavior for long—reports say that after the student left, Shelby walked back over to Gilley and kissed him again.

After the footage surfaced, both Gilley and Moss admitted to having a sexual relationship, including engaging in intimate activity on school property. Gilley even acknowledged that students could have been present on campus at the time of some of their encounters, which raised serious alarms about the safety and professionalism expected in a school setting. The fact that this happened in a place where children are supposed to be safe and looked after made the situation especially disturbing for parents and school officials.

Gilley appeared at a hearing in April to face possible consequences. He admitted to his actions and asked for understanding, saying he had made a mistake. But his plea didn’t change the outcome. In May, the state commission in charge of police certification decided to strip him of his badge permanently. He is now banned from working in law enforcement anywhere in the state. One of the commissioners involved in the decision pointed out the seriousness of Gilley’s behavior, saying that as someone trusted to protect children, he instead chose to have sexual contact on school grounds.

As for Shelby Moss, she was suspended for two days by the school district. She later resigned from her job in May. However, her case isn’t over yet. The Tennessee State Board of Education is still deciding whether or not to take away her teaching license, which would prevent her from working as an educator in the future.

The footage from Gilley’s bodycam also included personal conversations between the two. In one clip, Gilley is heard telling Shelby that she complains he doesn’t touch her enough. This suggests that their relationship had become emotional and physical well beyond just a few moments caught on camera. Screenshots reportedly show text messages where they exchanged “I love you,” indicating that the affair may have been ongoing and more serious than just a one-time lapse in judgment.

No one knows for sure why the body camera was on at the time—it may have been left running by accident or turned on without Gilley realizing. Either way, the device meant to ensure accountability ended up being the very thing that revealed his misconduct. What makes this case particularly troubling is that it happened in a school environment, a place where students are supposed to be protected and supported by adults they can trust. Instead, two authority figures used that setting for an affair, creating a situation that could have been witnessed by children and potentially left lasting impressions.

The incident has become another example of how private behavior can quickly become public when people in trusted roles make poor choices. It also highlights how technology, like bodycams, which are designed to protect both officers and the public, can sometimes catch moments that expose serious misconduct. Now, both individuals are facing the long-term consequences of their actions—not just in their careers, but in how they are viewed by their community and the children they were supposed to help guide.
