Donald Trump has stirred up trouble again, and now, according to one of his longtime critics, he’s feeling nervous.

California Senator Adam Schiff, who played a leading role in Trump’s first impeachment trial and was also a member of the January 6th Committee, responded to Trump’s attacks in a message to his supporters. Schiff said that Trump’s insults toward him are like a “badge of honor.

Trump has repeatedly called him names such as “sleazebag,” “traitor,” and even “one of the true lowlifes in the history of politics in America.” Schiff explained that while those in Trump’s political circle might cheer those attacks, he sees them as proof that he’s standing up to the former president.

Schiff also accused Trump of threatening democracy itself. He wrote that Trump is worried about losing political control in the upcoming midterm elections. Instead of changing unpopular policies—like his tariff battles, aggressive immigration raids, or controversial spending plans—Trump is trying to keep power by pressuring Republicans in Texas to redraw their congressional districts in ways that would favor him.

Schiff said this situation is both “sad” and “tragic,” but he believes California must respond if Texas moves forward with such a plan. He expressed support for California Governor Gavin Newsom’s “Election Rigging Response Act,” which is meant to counter any unfair political maneuvers by Texas. According to Schiff, California voters will decide on this act in November. If it passes, the state will be able to block anything Texas does in this area. If it fails, Trump could end up with more political freedom and influence for the next two years.

In closing, Schiff made it clear that he believes Trump has gone too far this time, saying that Trump has “poked the bear,” and now it’s time to push back.
