Baby Born in Amniotic Sac, But When the Doctor Breaks It, He Discovers Something Terrifying
Susanna is swiftly wheeled by the orderly to the delivery room of the hospital. The unbearable pain she feels from her contractions mixes with the immense joy that little Tomas, the baby she is about to give birth to, brings her. Jasper, her husband, has decided to accompany her during this most crucial moment in their marriage. He is nervous because it is his first time witnessing such an important event, but he knows he must stay calm to transmit the same sense of calmness to his beloved wife.
“You must stay calm, my love. I assure you everything will be fine. Don’t worry about anything,” Jasper says.
“Thank you, Jasper. Oh, thank you for being here with me,” Susanna replies, showing obvious signs of pain.
Jasper is positioned at the head of the bed as instructed earlier by the young nurse to avoid obstructing the work of the medical team. At that moment, he tightly holds his dear wife’s hands and wipes the sweat from her forehead. Susanna is about to bring a new life into this world, undoubtedly the most wonderful experience a woman can have.
The midwife shouts, “Push!” while pressing on Susanna’s abdomen. “Push, push!” But despite Susanna’s efforts, the baby is taking too long to arrive. The midwife considers that perhaps a cesarean section might be necessary due to the difficulty of the delivery. However, she decides to try one more time to avoid the operation.
“Push, push!” the midwife insists, pressing harder on the upper part of the uterus. “Push! Let’s go, push!”
Susanna screams louder than she ever has in her life. “Wow, that’s it! With more strength!” exclaims the midwife with a noticeable and obvious smile of joy, despite wearing a mask, as she sees little Tomas. But her smile quickly fades, and her eyes widen in shock at what she sees. The young nurse, upon looking at the newborn, reacts in the same way. Jasper, noticing the behavior of both women, asks, “What is happening?” and somewhat worried, demands, “Tell me what’s happening! What’s going on? Jasper, midwife, tell me what happened. Tell me, nurse!”
“Hurry, get the obstetrician immediately,” the midwife orders.
“Yes, midwife, I’ll go right away,” the nurse responds and quickly runs out. Jasper lets go of his wife’s hands and then looks at his son.
“My God, what is that?” he cries out in desperation.
“Oh my God,” the midwife says, clearly concerned. She had never seen anything like this in her life. “I don’t know what this is, but don’t worry. The obstetrician is on the way to help us.”
“You don’t know what it is? Is it something serious?” Jasper yells, a mix of anger and distress in his voice. “How can you not know what it is? What is that thing surrounding my son?”
“Calm down, man. I’m not to blame for this phenomenon. I don’t know what this is,” the midwife responds, trying to explain the situation to calm the terrified father but also to buy some time until the obstetrician arrives in the delivery room. “This seems like a bad omen.”
“Enough!” Jasper interrupts the midwife, adding forcefully, “I want to know what’s happening with my son because he’s lying motionless on that stretcher.”
Under the pressure, the midwife prepares to tell them what she believes is happening with little Tomas, who has remained completely still inside the amniotic sac since he emerged from the womb. She is interrupted by the nurse, who bursts into the room.
“Chief, the obstetrician is performing an emergency surgery right now,” exclaims the young nurse, breathless from running through the hospital corridors.
“No!” Jasper shouts, his voice filled with urgency. “I’ll go get him myself. Tell me where he is. My son is lying motionless on that stretcher. You can’t leave him like this! Nurse, tell me where he is, or I’ll tear open that sac myself! Tell me now!”
“Please, calm down. Let me finish. The obstetrician is already on his way,” the midwife pleads. Hearing this, Jasper calms down a bit, and soon after, the obstetrician finally arrives.
“Good afternoon. Let’s see what’s happening here,” he says as he enters the room. “From what I see, the infant is wrapped in what is common,” says the obstetrician, glancing quickly at the baby from a distance before addressing the parents. “What you are seeing is quite rare. In my 30 years of medical service, I’ve only encountered two cases like this. According to statistics, it occurs in about one in every 880,000 births.”
“Midwife, I imagine you’ve already explained to the parents that their baby was born enveloped?”
“Well, more or less, doctor,” the midwife responded, “but I felt it was necessary to call you because in my 25 years of service, I’ve never encountered a case like this. As you mentioned, doctor, this is extremely uncommon.”
“Yes, it’s quite rare,” the doctor explained. “Normally, this membrane breaks inside the uterus during the mother’s contractions. As I said, I’ve only seen this twice in my career, and there’s usually nothing to worry about. With a simple surgical procedure, the infant is removed from the amniotic fluid. However,”—and I’m sorry to say this—”typically, the baby continues to move inside the sac, just as it did in the cavity. So, I fear the worst, as I’ve noticed that the baby hasn’t moved a single time since I entered the delivery room.”
“But do something, doctor!” Jasper shouted, desperate and slightly angry. “Don’t just stand there! How can you be so cold?”
Susanna, who had been utterly silent, couldn’t believe what she was seeing. Ten years ago, she suffered the premature death of a child, which was the main reason for her divorce from Miguel, her first husband. Miguel later married her best friend, and they had beautiful twins. Now, as she faces the chance to give birth to another child, something similar is happening again, and she can’t hold back the overwhelming flood of tears.
“Oh my God, why me? Why me? Am I condemned to have dead children?” she cried out.
Jasper, who obviously understood what his wife was referring to, wanted to go to her to comfort her. But as he tried, he took a couple of steps and collapsed to his knees. In his uncontrollable despair, he began to pray, looking upwards.
“Oh God, creator and master of all that exists, I beg you, Almighty King, to show your glory, your majesty, and your mercy among us. I ask for life for little Tomas, and if necessary, I offer you mine in exchange for his. Take it—here’s my chest. Open it, take my heart, and carry it wherever you desire,” but his voice broke into sobs, and he couldn’t continue.
“Nurse, hand me the lancet, please,” the doctor ordered. “We will proceed to rupture the sac, as it is commonly known.”
The young nurse hesitated to find the surgical instrument, as he was saddened and inexperienced. Never before in his few years of service had he witnessed a case like this. He didn’t want the baby’s death to be confirmed, so he voluntarily delayed finding the tool the doctor had requested.
“Nurse, give me the lancet, please. I need it right now,” the doctor insisted. “Order the gynecologist immediately.”
“Excuse me,” he responds, handing over the requested item to the specialist. “I found her, doctor. Here she is.”
The professional approaches with the surgical instrument to where little Tomas lies motionless and then proceeds to break the amniotic sac. After checking his vital signs with a stethoscope, he confirms what they feared.
“No, it’s too late. Maybe if I had been here just a few minutes earlier, everything would be different,” the doctor speaks with sadness. “Even though I’ve been in the medical profession for three decades, one never gets used to these kinds of situations, especially when it involves newborns—innocent creatures with a whole life ahead of them. Sir, ma’am, I regret to inform you from the bottom of my heart, but this little angel, your beloved Tomas, has passed away.”
But before the doctor finishes speaking, the mother and father exclaim in unison, “No, no, Tomas, for God’s sake!”
Suddenly, upon hearing the intensity of their cry, the little one violently expels the amniotic fluid from his respiratory system. Like every little one who comes into this world, he does so to welcome the precious air.
“Praise the Lord!” exclaims the nurse with joy. “The little one is moving! He’s moving! Look how he’s kicking and flailing! He’s so beautiful!”
The young man picks up the baby, and after giving him a gentle pat to encourage him to scream and cry, he hands him to the stunned mother, who cradles him in her arms and holds him close to her welcoming chest. Meanwhile, Jasper leaps around the room with excitement, hugging the nurse, gynecologist, and midwife. Absolute joy fills the room. Smiles, laughter, and chuckles reign behind their masks, with the only exception being little Tomas, who cries and cries amidst the celebration. But this is normal for little ones his age.
