Steven Weber had planned a sweet and romantic way to propose to his girlfriend while they were on vacation.

Back in September 2019, he sadly drowned while asking his girlfriend, Kenesha Antoine, to marry him underwater.

The couple from the U.S. were on a special trip to Tanzania, staying in a unique underwater cabin at a resort. Steven had a plan to surprise her by swimming up to the window of their room and showing her a note inside a plastic bag with his proposal.

But that note ended up being his last message, as he never made it back to the surface.

Kenesha later shared her heartbreak on Facebook, saying she never got to say “yes.”

She had filmed the whole thing—Steven swimming to the window, holding up the note that said, “I can’t hold my breath long enough to tell you everything I love about you. But… everything I love about you, I love more every day!” Then he turned the paper over to show: “Will you marry me?”

He also pulled out a ring from his swimming trunks before swimming away from the window. When Kenesha went to check on him from the deck above, he never came back up.

Officials later confirmed that Steven had drowned while diving alone. When resort staff responded to the emergency, it was already too late.

Kenesha posted the video and her emotional response online. She called Steven a beautiful soul, saying he brought light and joy to everyone around him. She described him as kind, funny, and full of love.

“You never came back from the water, so you never got to hear my answer,” she wrote. “Yes! Yes! A million times yes, I will marry you!”

She added that what was supposed to be the happiest day of their lives turned into the most heartbreaking.

Even through the pain, she said she was grateful for the amazing memories they shared in their final days together.
