As I grew up, I often overheard people whispering about successful single women. They’d say things like, “She’s got money, but no man. Men are probably scared to approach her,” or “She’s doing well, but can’t keep a man; her success made her forget her role as a woman.”
They’d even comment on whether she had children, assuming that her success meant she must be lonely. In the past, these remarks didn’t bother me much.
