House Republican Pushes Amendment to Let Trump Run for Third Term – While Blocking Obama and Others
Rep. Andy Ogles, a Republican from Tennessee, has introduced an idea that could change the rules about how many terms a U.S. president can serve. Right now, the U.S. Constitution, through the 22nd Amendment, says that no one can be elected president more than twice. This rule was put in place in 1951, after Franklin D. Roosevelt served an unprecedented four terms in office, something that had never happened before or since.
Ogles’ proposal, however, seeks to allow a president to run for up to three terms. But there’s a twist: the change would specifically exclude former Presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush, and Bill Clinton from running again. This is because all three served two terms back-to-back, and the way Ogles wrote the amendment ensures they remain ineligible. However, Donald Trump, who served one term, lost re-election, and then returned for a second term, would be allowed to run for a third.
This idea is a long shot because changing the Constitution isn’t easy. For Ogles’ proposal to become law, it would need two-thirds of the members in both the House of Representatives and the Senate to agree to it. Then, it would need to be approved by three-fourths of the states—38 in total. This is a tough process that rarely happens, but it highlights how much support Donald Trump has among certain Republicans in Congress.
Trump’s situation is unique in modern history. He’s only the second president ever to serve non-consecutive terms. The first was Grover Cleveland, who served as the 22nd president, lost re-election to Benjamin Harrison, and then came back to win against Harrison and serve as the 24th president.
While this amendment might appeal to Trump’s loyal supporters, it raises big questions about the future of U.S. presidential term limits, fairness, and how far some lawmakers are willing to go to reshape the rules to suit their political goals. For now, it’s just a proposal, but it shows the lengths some are willing to go to keep Trump in power.
