She Gave Birth While in Coma. Doctors Couldn’t Believe Their Eyes When They Saw The Baby!
When Ebony was taken to the hospital in harrowing conditions, the doctors decided to put her in a coma to allow her body to heal. But while she was unconscious, she ended up giving birth, and the medical staff was shocked at the sight of her miracle baby.
Ebony Stevenson was a relatively healthy and normal teenager from Oldham, at least if she didn’t count the plaguing headaches she often experienced as a college student. These constant migraines made her life difficult. She did not want to skip classes, but from time to time, the headaches got so severe that she could not lift her head from the pillow.
One evening, early in December of 2018, she went to bed feeling really sick. Like always, she was going to sleep it off to the best of her ability and continue with life the following day. However, when her mom found her on the bathroom floor, shaking with spasms that looked like seizures, she was immediately rushed to the hospital.
Doctors took a while to decide what to do, but in the end, they opted for an induced medical coma. For a few days, it seemed like their young patient was indeed experiencing some kind of seizure. With an induced coma, the activity in the brain is calmed down so doctors can more clearly determine the severity and cause of the seizures, as well as the appropriate course of action.
When the team of medical experts were working with Ebony, they diagnosed her with something that left her mom in complete shock. This condition is known as uterus didelphys, which meant this young woman had two uteruses, with the second one hidden behind the first. Only one of these uteruses was connected to a fallopian tube. In essence, that meant that this patient had a slim chance of conceiving, as the fallopian tubes carry the eggs to the uterus.
However, the second uterus behind the first one was holding a secret and a huge surprise—an almost full-term baby was hiding in the shadows. Doctors at the Great Manchester Hospital were surprised that no one had told them that the girl was pregnant before they induced the coma. That would have been a crucial part of the information to share with the medical team who was fighting to help this girl.
But Ebony’s mom swore that she knew nothing of the baby, and that her daughter herself was completely unaware of the pregnancy. First of all, she had only put on a little weight in the last few months, and she didn’t have a visible bump. However, she had been having regular periods, she explained. But the doctors told her that the bleeding must have come from the other uterus.
They guessed that the seizures had been caused by the undetected pregnancy, and after doing some medical tests, they determined that Ebony had suffered preeclampsia. This condition occurs only during pregnancy; the blood pressure rises to an alarming level, and the placenta might rupture, putting both the baby and the mother’s lives in danger.
Time now was of the essence; doctors had to perform an emergency C-section. Although Ebony’s mother Sheree was still struggling to accept that her baby girl wasn’t pregnant, she had to give consent for the doctors to proceed. About 3 hours after the first contraction started, they delivered a 7 lb 10 oz baby girl, an almost 3 and 1/2 kg baby is quite a healthy size. But there were one or two reasons for the doctors to be concerned. First of all, since his mother had been completely unaware of the pregnancy, she hadn’t been monitoring her diet and alcohol intake nor taking useful supplements. Ebony was also quite a sporty girl and had been exercising throughout the entire pregnancy without ensuring the safety of the baby in her womb.
For these reasons, the doctors had to carry out some tests on her. After 3 days, Ebony finally came out of the coma. The nurse who saw her first opening her eyes made sure that all her reflexes and body responses were normal and immediately informed the doctor on call that his patient was conscious. It was him who first congratulated Ebony on her baby girl.
At first, she thought the doctor had confused her with someone else. When they brought in a baby girl and put it on her chest, she thought everyone in the hospital was crazy. She wasn’t even pregnant, and they were saying that she’d only been unconscious for 3 days. How could she have conceived and given birth to a child in such a short time?
However, the doctor explained that she had two uteruses and told her that all that time she was hiding a little life in her body. In a matter of a few minutes, Ebony had to process the fact that her discomfort had been caused by an undetected pregnancy and that sometime in the last 3 days, she had become a mother.
It was no surprise that Ebony was completely overwhelmed. At the young age of 18, she had not even decided whether she even wanted to have children. She wasn’t in a steady relationship with the baby’s father, and she had her studies and career path to consider. And yet now she was a mother with all the responsibilities thereof. But as she held the little baby girl in her arms, she couldn’t help but think she was perfect.
She would need some time to bond with the baby as well as process the thoughts that were rushing through her head. But in the meantime, she found a beautiful name to give to her miracle. She would call her surprise baby Elodie.
While Ebony was working through her own process, one of the doctors came to sit down with her. He was more than a little concerned about the little girl’s health. Something about her reflexes and alertness seemed to be off. First, he started asking Ebony questions about her lifestyle during pregnancy. The moment that the doctor spoke of it, her eyes widened in shock. As they had feared, she hadn’t abstained from drinking alcohol or eating foods she should have avoided, and hadn’t adjusted her workouts to her condition.
The second reason for concern was the fact that preeclampsia could cause a number of medical problems for the baby, such as cardiovascular, metabolic, and neurological diseases. They could suffer from learning disorders, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, and even deafness or blindness. Therefore, if she gave permission, they wanted to perform a few more tests.
The discussion threw Ebony into turmoil. How could she ever forgive herself if she was the reason that her little girl wasn’t perfect? To her, the baby looked fine, but with the new information made available to her, she felt overwhelmed yet again. But this time for totally different reasons. Now she was a mom and responsible for making good decisions for her baby.
One thing she realized at that moment was that she would do anything in her power to make sure her daughter was healthy and happy until her very last day. When they took Elodie away for the test, Ebony broke down in sobs. She was still trying to get her head around being pregnant and not knowing that at all. She also asked herself whether the time between Elodie’s birth and her awakening from the coma might have had any negative effects on her daughter’s health.
She had heard that lack of emotional bonding could play a profound role in the health of a baby and the relationship between mother and child. Finally, they brought Elodie back to her, and she held her close to her heart. The baby looked a little pale and was awfully quiet. Now all she had to do was wait for the results of the tests.
After about 3 hours, two doctors came into the room bearing unbelievable news—Elodie was in perfect health. The sleepiness and drowsiness were just the byproduct of the medicine administered to Ebony when the coma was induced, which would work out of the baby’s system in a few days. Her brain and heart functions were tested at optimal levels.
The young mom and her baby were released from the hospital later that day to start their lives together. Despite the shock, Ebony and her mom are ready to embark on this new, unexpected chapter of their lives and to raise this miracle baby to the best of their abilities. Ebony and Elodie have such a nice ring to it, almost like the lyrics of a famous song, and the hope that their relationship, although born unexpectedly, will forever be one of harmony and unconditional love.
