The beautiful woman who once worked as a dance instructor struggled with a health condition and vanished from her home in 1992. There were no signs of forced entry or foul play, and her husband of 20 years was left with countless questions.
Bob loved his wife, as did community members who knew her as “The Sparrow.” Everyone wanted to find her and police searched far and wide, hoping to locate the missing citizen. However, days turned into weeks, months, and years.
After seven years, authorities eventually declared Patricia legally dead, and Bob, who spent lots of money searching for his partner over the years, made peace with the reality that he might never know what happened to his wife.
But after three decades, Bob and Patricia’s siblings were in disbelief when they finally received news about Patricia’s whereabouts. Officials had reason to believe she was residing in Puerto Rico. She had reportedly wandered through the country’s streets until 1999, when she was admitted as a patient in an adult care home.
Ross Township Deputy Police Chief Brian Kohlhepp said a social worker alerted them about the situation, and thanks to a DNA test, the woman’s identity was officially confirmed as Patricia Kopta.
Her sister, Gloria Smith, shared that Patricia always loved warm weather and being close to the beach. Gloria also noted her sister’s increasingly odd behavior shortly before her disappearance.
It was suggested that she arrived on the island via a European cruise ship, but many other details were still unknown.
Bob, who never remarried, was stunned by the ordeal and unexpected revelations. However, he expressed immense relief knowing his wife was alive. He explained:
“I went through a lot. Every time they’d find a body somewhere (I wondered), ‘Is it Patricia? Is it Patricia?'”
While Bob was happy to hear about Patricia’s whereabouts, he revealed he had no plans to travel to Puerto Rico. He was determined to move on and let go of the past knowing she was safe.
Meanwhile, Patricia’s sister had other plans and longed to visit her sibling. She said: “Whether she knows me or not, I still want to see her and give her a hug and tell her I love her. I thought maybe she had died.”
Gloria expressed difficulty getting in touch with her sister after all these years. She revealed she had called the adult care home in Puerto Rico several times to speak to Patricia, but to her dismay, she had been unable to converse with her because of her dementia.
Deputy Police Chief Kohlhepp was grateful to have solved the case after years of wondering and unanswered questions. He said it meant a great deal to the family, adding:
“The big joy in [it] is being able to pass it onto the family. To have them experience that and know she is alive and doing well.”
