Not True!’ Chuck Schumer Fires Back at NBC’s Kristen Welker Over Claims He ‘Misled’ Americans About Biden’s Mental Fitness
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) found himself on the defensive when he was asked about his past comments reassuring the public about President Joe Biden’s mental fitness.
During an interview on Meet the Press on Sunday, moderator Kristen Welker showed Schumer a clip from February where he had confidently vouched for Biden’s mental sharpness. In the clip, Schumer said, “I talk to President Biden regularly, sometimes several times a week. His mental sharpness is great. It’s as good as it’s always been over the years. All the talk from the Right about his mental decline is simply wrong and just propaganda.”
After playing the clip, Welker asked Schumer a blunt question: “What do you say to Americans who feel you and other Democrats misled them about President Biden’s mental fitness?”
Schumer, clearly unhappy with the question, strongly defended Biden and praised his achievements. “We didn’t mislead anyone,” Schumer responded. “Let’s look at what President Biden has accomplished. He has one of the most impressive records of any president in recent history. The legislation we passed under his leadership has been historic—some of the most important since Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal or Lyndon Johnson’s Great Society. He’s also helped confirm 235 judges, which is a record. He’s not only a strong leader but also a patriot and a great person. When he decided to step down, he did it for the right reasons—not just for the Democratic Party, but for America as a whole. We should all respect and salute him for that.”
Welker didn’t stop there. She put Schumer on the spot by asking if he still believed Biden could serve another four years had he stayed in the race and won. “Do you think President Biden could have handled another term as president?”
This time, Schumer avoided a clear answer. “I’m not going to speculate on that,” he said. “What I do know is that his record speaks for itself. He’s been an outstanding president, and history will remember him that way.”
The interview highlighted Schumer’s determination to defend Biden’s legacy while sidestepping direct speculation about Biden’s future fitness to serve. You can watch the full interview on NBC.
