Nurse Noticed Something Hidden in Woman who was in a 15 Year Coma. Scared, she Alerts Doctor
“What could scare her so much that you find her screaming and disrupting the entire hospital? Nurse Mabin is a nurse with over 20 years of experience, and in over two decades, she had never seen anything that scared her as much as what she saw in the ward of the girl known as Sleeping Beauty.
Sleeping Beauty – it’s interesting to know that for over 15 years, those two words literally summarized and described the story of our main character, Luz Maria. Fifteen years ago, Maria was only eight years old when she was found lying unconscious on the sidewalk of one of the city’s busiest roads. The little girl was in a coma and placed on a life support machine. They could trace her school through the uniform she was wearing. The school authority said that the little girl was one of those who came to school by themselves, and no one ever met or knew her parents.
Every effort to find Maria’s parents was unsuccessful. This also meant that no one handled her hospital bills. Would they leave the young girl to die, or would her parents eventually step forward? A few weeks later, Maria’s parents, Sergio and Catalina, finally came to the hospital. Sergio and Catalina are an old couple who eventually had a child after trying for many years. When the medical staff told the couple how much it would cost to keep their daughter alive, Catalina broke down in tears because she knew they couldn’t afford to pay her bills. Saying nothing, she simply walked out of the doctor’s office.
Sergio gave the order to take Maria off the life support machine, but everyone in the hospital had grown fond of Maria and felt sorry for her unfortunate circumstance. They didn’t want to see her die; some even treated her like their own daughter, most especially Nurse Mabin. She was the one who always talked to Maria and sometimes also played music for her. Anyone who saw how much Mabin cared for the little girl would think she was more than just a nurse to her. You would be forgiven for thinking they were related. She was her primary caregiver and perhaps her guardian angel.
The hospital staff all referred to Maria as Sleeping Beauty because of her stunning facial features. Mabin rallied her colleagues to all come together and help contribute to the girl’s medical fees; they all agreed. That’s how much they all cared for Maria. Dr. Eduardo contributed the highest amount amongst all the hospital staff; he is the medical director who runs the hospital. Just like Mabin, Dr. Eduardo was also very kind to Maria. However, Mabin knew her colleagues might not be able to shoulder the girl’s medical bills for so long, so she also set up a GoFundMe page to help with the bills.
The distance between Maria’s parents’ home and the hospital was also a challenge for the old couple. So Catalina said to Mabin, ‘It’s difficult for us to be here every day for Maria. Sergio is in a wheelchair, and I can only bring him occasionally. As much as I want to be here by my daughter’s side, it takes a serious toll on my health. You are already like her second mother; would you be able to look after her for me? I would make sure I’m here once or twice every week.’ Mabin agreed and was honored to be responsible for Maria.
A few months later, Catalina passed away. Her daughter Maria had now been in a coma for over 14 years, and most people had lost hope she would ever regain consciousness. Sergio and Mabin were the only ones who remained optimistic. Maria was no longer a little girl; she had grown to be a beautiful woman. Still, she had missed all her teenage years. She had never been to high school or attended prom, and when or if she wakes up, Maria would be a stranger in her own body, in a new world without her mother and with responsibilities not expected of a young woman. She would be an eight-year-old in the body of a young adult; this is the new reality that Sleeping Beauty was faced with.
One day, on our way to work, Mabin was involved in a serious accident. This accident put her in a wheelchair, and doctors told her it would take many months before she recovered. With Mabin not there to take care of Maria, the responsibility fell on Dr. Eduardo. After some time, one of the nurses told Dr. Eduardo that she noticed Maria hadn’t seen her period in a while. The physician ran some tests and stated Maria was experiencing irregular menstruation; there was no cause for alarm.
Nurse Mabin felt uneasy when she was away from Mario’s side; she even urged Dr. Eduardo to send her pictures and videos from time to time to know how the girl was faring. It took Mabin six months to recover from her injuries. When she was eventually declared fit enough to walk again, she wasted no time going to the hospital to see Maria.
The nurse stated that she was as excited as a mother who hadn’t seen her child in over 180 days. But when Mabin saw Maria, she noticed something hidden, or perhaps strange. Why was Maria looking so different? Yes, she had grown in those six months, but Mabin also noticed she had added weight. This kind of growth doesn’t come with age alone. Why was she covered with more than one blanket as well? Mabin whispered when she raised the covers, the 47-year-old nurse was stunned by what she saw. Mabin couldn’t comprehend it; instead, she just ran out of the room screaming Dr. Eduardo’s name.
The first nurse she met in the corridor told her he won’t be in the hospital for the next two days. She asked her several times what the problem was, but Mabin wasn’t able to utter a word; rather, she dragged the nurse to Maria’s Ward to see for herself. Mabin stammered as she said, ‘How is she pregnant? She is pregnant, isn’t she? Her stomach looks slightly bigger, and she’s added weight, so she has to be pregnant.’
Other nurses and doctors had also stepped into the room, and one of them explained that they noticed that she changes, but Dr. Eduardo ran some tests, and the results proved otherwise. Mabin insisted that they conducted new tests just in case something had changed. The test results confirmed her fears; Maria was pregnant, except this Maria didn’t have the same intervention as the mother of Jesus. Someone must have taken advantage of her; an internal investigation was recommended, but Mabin disagreed.
When Sergio was informed about what had happened, he was furious and got the police involved. Two months later, Maria’s baby girl was delivered via C-section, and a quest for the father began. Every male employee in the hospital was made to undergo DNA tests. So who is the father of Maria’s daughter? The test results revealed it was Dr. Eduardo who had taken advantage of Maria. He had used his position to ensure that all efforts to expose him failed. The nurses stated that somehow he was the one who always did the tests when any of them suspected anything. If he had been around when Mabin returned, he would have sabotaged her efforts as well. However, after the DNA tests were done, there was no trace of Dr. Eduardo.
Without Dr. Eduardo’s monthly financial contribution, they could no longer keep Maria on life support. While everyone at Mabin agreed the best option was to let her go, she wasn’t ready to give up on Maria, so she threw a Hail Mary. Just before they disconnected Sleeping Beauty from the machine, Mabin placed the baby girl on Maria’s chest.
The baby couldn’t stop crying, but after a short while, she was at peace on her mother’s body. It was like Maria’s body calmed the storm. While everyone else had their hearts in their mouth, Sergio, Mabin, and most of the hospital staff looked on in anticipation, hoping that after 15 years, they might get a miracle. And if you ask me, they are due a miracle; otherwise, this would be the end of Maria’s life.
However, some stories don’t end the way you want them to. They waited several minutes, but the miracle didn’t happen. Mabin stood in one corner of the hospital and couldn’t stop crying. Despite how much she fought back her tears, one of the other nurses picked up the baby, who was now asleep. As everyone resigned to fate, the little girl started crying again, and that’s when it happened.
Like a Phoenix rising from the ashes, and for the first time over 5,400 days, Maria opened her eyes again. All she said was, ‘Water.’ Although Maria’s life would never be the same again, Sergio was happy to have his daughter back, same as Mabin. I guess we can call Sleeping Beauty her daughter too. What do you think about Mabin and Maria’s story? Till next time, stay safe.”
