Michael found a crying black baby in the trash and decided to save her. Years later, he received a call that left him in great shock. Thirty-two-year-old Michael, a police officer, finished a dinner at a nearby restaurant and decided to take a walk before heading home.

As he walked, thoughts of his girlfriend filled his mind. He had started dating her only two weeks ago, and it felt like he had known her all his life. He was even beginning to consider starting a family with her.

He had just passed through an alley when he suddenly heard the unmistakable cry of a baby. He jolted up in alarm as he looked around to see where the noise was coming from. He soon sighted a trash can. Michael rushed towards it and was petrified to see a black baby inside, wrapped in blankets and wailing. Filled with pity, he quickly picked up the baby and began to console her. Soon, the baby stopped crying, but Michael noticed that the tiny girl’s body was burning up. Quickly checking for injuries and finding none, he whipped out his phone to call 911.

Michael wondered who could have abandoned such a young child in a trash can. Perhaps her parents didn’t have enough money to care for her. Whatever the case might be, it was simply a cruel thing to do. As he stayed with the baby and waited for the ambulance, he stared into her eyes and immediately felt a special connection. It was a feeling he’d never experienced before. He just wanted to adore, love, and protect this tiny being in his arms. Was this what being a dad felt like?

Minutes passed as he played with her fingers, and she smiled up at him cutely. “Who left you here, angel? Didn’t they see how precious and adorable you are?” he said, a joy bubbling up in him as he stared at her. He couldn’t imagine anyone abandoning such an innocent baby. Soon enough, the ambulance arrived, and they rushed the baby girl to the hospital. Michael, who had informed his boss about the situation, went along with them. The hospital began running tests on the baby to see if she had caught any illnesses. They found out that she had mild pneumonia.

The doctor, seeing that the baby was black, looked at Michael skeptically, wondering if the white officer was the father. However, Michael explained how he’d found the baby and instructed the doctor to proceed with treatment. Two weeks later, the baby was in good health. During those two weeks, Michael visited the girl every day to check on her. He had grown fond of the infant in such a short span of time that he decided to take responsibility for the child.

Michael discussed this with his girlfriend and colleague, Monica. He told her that he wanted to start a family with her and was happy the little girl had come into their lives. But Monica disapproved of this plan. “Look at us; she looks nothing like us. What will people say? They’ll think I’m barren. Why do you want to humiliate me?” she said in a fit of anger. Michael tried to convince her, but she vehemently refused. The argument persisted for weeks, causing further strain on their relationship.

One argument escalated to the point where Monica stormed into the hospital. She found Michael feeding the baby, which only intensified her anger and disgust. She forcefully took the bottle from him and emptied its contents. As she raised her voice, the poor little baby began crying, and her cries further irritated Monica. “Will you stop crying?” she yelled at the baby, not even considering the baby’s fear. Then she turned to Michael and barked, “Choose between her and me!”

Embarrassed by Monica’s behavior, Michael couldn’t believe she was causing a scene at the hospital and yelling at a little baby. By then, the nurses had already gathered and were trying to get her out, but she kept struggling with them. It took the intervention of some security guards before they were finally able to bundle her out. Michael was disappointed in Monica.

He had always thought she had a kind heart. He had seen her as the woman he wanted to spend the rest of his life with, but with everything she had done since the baby girl came into his life, he knew they had no future together. Not helping was bad enough, but she resorted to doing all sorts of nasty things just to discourage Michael from taking the baby. Soon, Michael was left with no other choice than to break up with Monica. This left Monica feeling betrayed and vengeful.

In due time, Michael completed the adoption process and brought the baby to live with him. He named the girl Leah. For a few months, Michael shuffled between his work and taking care of the baby. Some people would find it awkward to work alongside an ex, but Michael barely even noticed because he was too busy taking care of Leah. When Monica saw how he prioritized the child, she became jealous and angry, deciding to teach him a terrifying lesson for dumping her. Monica devised a scheme. She planted an incriminating file in his office, which reported that he was involved in bribery.

When questioned, Michael vehemently denied the accusation, insisting he knew nothing about bribery. He professed his love for the force and emphasized that he took his oaths as an officer very seriously. However, the odds were stacked against him, and he ended up getting fired.

Michael, without a source of income, had to use his savings to provide food and the basic needs for himself and Leah, who had turned two. He searched for jobs around, but due to his employment history, he couldn’t land any decent work. They lived off his savings until Michael eventually ran out of money, leading to financial problems. Michael even struggled to eat twice daily.

This went on for months. Having exhausted his savings, Michael had to resort to getting food and clothes from charity homes. His landlord almost threw them out of the house, but upon seeing he had a child with him, the man showed pity and gave Michael more time to pay his rent. Devastated and unhappy, the only thing keeping Michael going was his princess, Leah. He wanted to give her the world. She was his strength, so he continued to struggle while searching for jobs.

Eventually, he got a job as a chef in a new restaurant that opened a few streets from where they lived. Michael couldn’t contain his excitement when he received the offer. Michael had good culinary skills, but immediately after he began working as a cop, he had put it aside. Now, he was glad that he was able to do another job he loved.

When he received his first salary payment, he immediately paid his rent and other pending bills. He also bought Leah a few toys and new clothes. Michael couldn’t hold back his tears when Leah tried on the clothes. She looked absolutely gorgeous in them. Once again, he blessed his stars for making their paths cross. Michael never knew how much happiness he was missing until Leah came along. She simply brought a sense of purpose into his life, and he wouldn’t trade it for anything.

As the months passed by, Michael excelled at his job, and soon he was given the position of head chef. Things became easier from then on. Although Michael wasn’t wealthy, he could give himself and Leah a comfortable life. Luckily, his little girl was content and happy with whatever he gave her. Together, they both knew they could conquer the world and make their dreams come true.

Five years flew past, and it was Leah’s birthday. Michael had chosen to always celebrate her birthdays on the day he rescued her. Leah was excited about celebrating her birthday, and she requested her dad get her a chocolate cake. Michael smiled at her. “Absolutely, my princess. You’ll get your cake for your birthday,” he told her. She hugged him tightly around the neck and ran to her room to play with her dolls.

Michael left the house to buy the cake a few streets away. A couple of hours had passed, and Michael still hadn’t returned. Leah began to get restless and worried. “Why hasn’t Dad come back yet?” she said to herself with a grumpy look. She then left the house to look for him.

Along the way, she sighted a toy store across the street. She was immediately distracted and started to cross the street, not looking out for cars. Just then, a car suddenly came from nowhere and hit her. Leah fell and hit her head on the floor. The driver, in fear, fled the scene without looking back. Pedestrians who saw the accident hurried towards Leah and immediately called an ambulance. They looked around to see if they’d find her parents or guardian but saw that she was alone.

Just before the accident, Michael had been on his way back with the two-layer chocolate cake Leah requested. He smiled as he pictured her reaction when he walked in with the cake. About fifteen minutes away from home, he suddenly bumped into someone. Luckily, the cake wasn’t affected. Looking up at the person, he saw that it was Monica, his ex-girlfriend and former colleague. Memories of the false accusation incident that led to him losing his job came rushing back. Another colleague had told him that she suspected Monica was the one who had set him up. He hadn’t seen her since he left the force more than five years ago.

“Hey, runaway cop. How are you? I heard you wash dishes and serve rich people now,” she asked mockingly. Michael knew she had no reason to be close to his street, so it was clear that she was stalking him. “Can I have some of that funny-looking cake? Don’t tell me you bought the cake for that girl. Geez, when are you going to stop wasting your money on her?” Monica thundered, blocking Michael’s way as he made to leave.

Michael was disgusted and disappointed. He couldn’t believe he had ever wanted to start a family with this woman. His anger fueled up as he thought about how

she was the reason he hadn’t been able to give the kind of life he had always envisioned to his daughter. He began to question her, asking how she could live with herself knowing she almost destroyed the little girl’s chances of a better future. Monica stared at him in rage. “I wanted only you, Michael. I didn’t want a crying, annoying child to come between us. I knew you wouldn’t love me anymore if that happened, and it did. You chose the baby over me,” she said angrily.

By then, Michael was beginning to get increasingly annoyed with her presence. He told her he needed to be on his way. Leah would definitely be waiting for her cake, but Monica was having none of it. She kept blocking his way. As if that wasn’t enough, she began throwing insults at him and Leah. That did it for Michael. He knew that Monica was simply out to ruin Leah’s birthday. He immediately brought out his phone to call the cops.

“What are you trying to do? Call the cops on me because of some silly black girl?” Monica yelled, then grabbed the phone from him and tossed it on the ground. It fell with a loud thud, and the screen immediately broke. By then, thirty minutes had already gone by. Michael knew Leah would already be worried sick. He warned Monica to get out of his way, or he would do something she wouldn’t like. Michael had actually been keeping his voice low so he wouldn’t attract a crowd, but now that he knew Monica was hell-bent on destroying Leah’s birthday, he raised his voice. Some passersby intervened, and they eventually got Monica to leave. All of that took another twenty agonizing minutes.

After Monica finally bowed to pressure and left, Michael heaved a sigh of relief. He let a smile play on his lips as he ran home, carefully holding the birthday cake. He was a few meters away from the house when he noticed a crowd gathered on the side of the road. He figured an accident must have happened. He had almost passed by the commotion when he saw a little foot. Noticing the victim was a little child, he then looked over to the child’s face only to see it was Leah.

“Leah!” he groaned. A cold chill ran down his spine, and his temperature immediately shot up. He began to sweat profusely. It just felt as if someone had set him on fire. The cake fell out of his hands as he hurriedly made his way to Leah, panting heavily. He lifted her head up and stared at her unconscious face.

“Leah, I’m sorry. Daddy’s here. Talk to me, baby. Daddy wants to hear your voice. I’m here now,” he yelled. “Call an ambulance!” he yelled at the crowd of people standing, and someone quickly informed him that an ambulance was already on the way. Michael then turned back to Leah. “Leah, my princess, open your eyes. Open your eyes for Daddy. Look, I got the cake you asked for. It’s red velvet; it’s exactly the one you wanted, baby.” He pulled her close to his chest as he wept sorrowfully. He thought back to when he found her at the dumpster and saved her. He also remembered the day he formally adopted her and how he had promised to always protect her. But now, he felt like a total failure. “I failed, I failed,” he murmured as he rocked her body, his tears dropping onto her face.

The ambulance arrived, and the medics quickly put Leah on a stretcher. On the way to the hospital, Michael continued to plead with Leah to open her eyes. He told her that she was his little warrior. He believed she could hear him, even if it didn’t seem like it. He told her to stay alive for him. At the hospital, the doctors did all they could to revive Leah. The accident had led to severe head trauma, and Leah sadly slipped into a coma.

“When will she wake up? I want to see my girl. She’s my life. I live for her,” Michael asked in a tiny voice he couldn’t even recognize as his. Unfortunately, the doctor’s response was discouraging. Leah was in bad condition, and none of them knew if she would ever wake up. Only time would tell.

Months passed, and Leah still hadn’t woken up. By then, Michael had fallen into depression, as life without his daughter was miserable. The doctors and nurses had become used to him visiting every day to see her. They all admired his courage, as he had refused to give up on her. Slowly, a year passed since Leah’s accident, and it was her birthday. Michael brought a red velvet cake to her hospital bed and sang a birthday song for her, but he wasn’t able to complete the song as he broke into tears and ran out of the hospital.

All he could think about was the terrifying scene the night she was in the accident. He was absolutely heartbroken. He missed his princess so much. He longed to see her running around the house, playing with her dolls, and smiling up at him as she called him Daddy. Throughout this period, the head doctor, Sarah, had been watching Michael and had secretly developed feelings for him. She fell in love with the way he loved his daughter and how he never gave up on her. Leah had also become a big part of her life. Sarah visited her frequently and spoke to her, urging her to wake up for everyone, especially for her father, who had been waiting to see her open her eyes. Sarah had done everything she could to keep Leah alive, and she also formed an attachment to the little girl.

Some doctors had advised Michael to turn off Leah’s life support. They believed it was best to just let her go so she could have eternal rest and peace. They didn’t think she stood a chance. But Michael wouldn’t have it. He refused and told them his daughter would wake up soon. He would never give up on her, no matter what.

Two years passed, and Leah was supposed to be celebrating her ninth birthday. This time, Michael mustered up all the courage he had and threw her a birthday party with the help of Sarah and some nurses. They all sang her a birthday song and cut her cake.

Michael looked at his unconscious daughter and said, “Leah, my dear, I know you’ve been asleep for two years now, but if you can hear me, know that Daddy’s here. He’s always here. I’ll never give up on you, my princess. I need you. I need you to wake up so we can achieve our dreams together. We still have so much to do together. Many toys and dolls are out there, and I want to get them for you, my dear daughter. Please wake up,” he said as he sobbed in pain.

Sarah looked at him sadly as she tried to comfort him. He had looked tired and stressed for the last two years. She wished Leah would wake up and put him out of his misery. The nurses tried to keep their tears in to avoid making the situation worse, but they couldn’t. Everybody was sad. They kept hoping and praying every day that the little girl would wake up.

One fateful day, a few months after Leah’s ninth birthday, Michael was at work in his restaurant. He had tried not to let his grief affect his cooking, but one way or another, his customers noticed. However, they kept coming back. By then, everyone knew what he was going through, and they all tried to support him. One of the boys working in the restaurant brought his phone to him. He took it and saw that it was Dr. Sarah who was calling. His heart skipped, suddenly afraid something bad had happened. He answered the phone.

“Michael, I’m going to need you to come down to the hospital as quickly as you can,” she said. “There’s someone here who’s asking for you. She says she’s still craving her red velvet cake,” Dr. Sarah said, letting out a hearty laugh.

Michael immediately rushed out of the kitchen and into the restaurant, screaming, “She’s awake! My baby girl is finally awake, everyone!” The whole restaurant went silent for a moment before everyone went wild. People came up to hug Michael and congratulate him. He told them he was going to the hospital and rushed out of the restaurant. On his way there, his heart beat so fast, he thought he was going to faint. He was filled with joy. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d smiled so hard.

When he got to Leah’s room, he saw that all the medical staff had gathered around her, so he couldn’t see her. Dr. Sarah was there too. She smiled at him and told him to hurry over to Leah’s bed. The staff eventually moved so Michael could see his daughter. As soon as their eyes met, father and daughter burst into cheerful laughter.

“Daddy, where’d you go? Everybody’s been crying. I thought something bad happened to you,” she pouted.

Michael pulled her into a tight hug and sobbed into her hair. She was back. His princess was back. His life finally made sense once again. He pulled away and looked into her eyes.

“Daddy, what’s wrong? Why are you crying so hard?” she stared up at him with her big eyes.

Michael shook his head, smiling. “Don’t worry, my dear. I’m just so happy you are awake. You have no idea how much I’ve missed you,” he said sweetly.

After spending some time with Leah, Michael went to Dr. Sarah’s office. He thanked her for staying by his side through it all. Michael was still talking when Sarah, without thinking, pulled him into her arms and kissed him. When she came to her senses, she immediately pulled away and kept repeating how sorry she was.

“You don’t need to be

sorry. I’ve waited for a day like this. I’m glad it’s finally here,” Michael said and returned the kiss. It was clear then that he had felt something for her all these long months too, but his attention had just been on Leah.

A year passed, and Leah was now in perfect health. She had long been discharged. She lived happily with her dad and Sarah, who was now a mother figure in her life. On Leah’s eleventh birthday, Michael proposed to Sarah, and she gladly accepted.

Shortly after the proposal, something beautiful also happened. The police department found out that Monica had set Michael up, resulting in her immediate termination. Michael was given his job back, but he humbly declined. He had fallen in love with cooking. The police department compensated him heavily, and he used the money to start a restaurant business.

Six months later, Michael and Sarah got married by a beautiful lakeside. Several cops from around the city were there to pay their respects to him. It was such a beautiful moment. Leah was there too, acting as the flower girl. When the priest pronounced them husband and wife, she screamed, “That’s my dad and mom! I’m so proud of you both!” Everyone couldn’t hold back their laughter. It was such a priceless moment.
