Lisa stood outside the courtroom, her heart pounding in her chest. She was about to do something that would change her life forever.
She was about to adopt three black children. Raising three children would be a big challenge because she was single, in her early 30s, and had a demanding full-time job. Still, Lisa had made a promise, and she wasn’t going to break it. She took a deep breath and entered the courtroom.
There, the three kids were seated beside a lawyer and the child services agent. The children, John, Harriet, and Jacob, looked up at Lisa with hopeful eyes. They recognized her as their mom’s best friend. Lisa smiled at them and walked over to the table.
She greeted them warmly, and the children smiled back at her, and Lisa’s heart swelled with love. She signed the adoption papers, officially adopting them. As she did, she felt a wave of joy wash over her. She knew she had made the right decision.
