Story Of a Texas Who woman Become a Millionaire when Bank Mistakenly Deposits $37 Million into Her Account
A woman from Texas became a millionaire for one day because of a clerical error by her bank.
KTVT-TV reported that when Dallas resident Ruth Balloon checked her bank account on Dec. 10, it had some extra money in it: an extra $37 million to be exact.
Balloon had wanted to believe “someone really gifted us with that $37 million” but she knew it was too good to be true.
“I was like wow, we have a lot of money!” she said.
“I was a millionaire. I have a screenshot of it so I can say that now. It’s quite a story.”
Her husband called their bank, LegacyTexas, which informed the couple the extra money wasn’t a Christmas miracle but a mistake. The bank apologized and took the money back.
“A ‘thank you’ reward would be a little bit good. You know? Just for being a good customer and notifying them as soon as possible,” she added.
“So first I was going to do 10 percent tithing. Then I was going to donate some money and then I would have probably invested it in real estate,” she said.
The bank told the television in a statement that even if Balloon had not caught the error, it would have been spotted and corrected. The bank said the manual entry error that resulted in the mistake has been addressed.
LegacyTexas Bank issued the following statement when reached out by CBS 11, “On Tuesday, December 10, our client made a foreign currency deposit into her LegacyTexas account. Due to the fluctuation in exchange rates, all foreign currency transactions must be manually entered into our system through our back office. When our client’s deposit was being keyed in, our representative entered her account number into the amount field by mistake.
Although our client brought the error to our attention and the transaction was immediately reversed, less the amount of her original deposit, it would have been caught and corrected during our evening processing. Rest assured, our systems are sound, and this manual entry error has been addressed.”
