President Donald Trump has congratulated Ronna McDaniel after she won the contentious election for Republican National Committee chair.
This will now be McDaniel’s fourth term in the position.
“Congratulations to Ronna McDaniel on her big WIN as RNC CHAIR,” Trump wrote in a post to Truth Social. “Now we have to STOP THE DEMOCRATS FROM CHEATING IN ELECTIONS!”
McDaniel, according to reports, had argued that she was in the best position to stop Trump from running as a third-party candidate if he loses the Republican nomination.
Most of the 168 voters who decided the party’s leadership would not say if they were supporters of Trump or not.
USA Today reports, “in a survey of all 168 RNC members, The New York Times reported, “just four offered an unabashed endorsement of Mr. Trump’s 2024 campaign. Twenty said the former president should not be the party’s nominee. An additional 35 said they would like to see a big primary field or declined to state their position on Mr. Trump. The remainder did not respond to messages.”
McDaniel won the support of approximately two-thirds of the voting body — 111 of the 167 votes cast.
Harmeet Dhillon and Mike Lindell had challenged her in the race.
“The results were not what we or hundreds of thousands of supporters around the country were hoping for, and I think the party is going to have to deal with that fallout of being in a disconnect from the grassroots,” Dhillon told reporters after McDaniel’s win was announced.
