Trump Supporters Shared How He Could Lose Their Support, And There’s One Issue That’s Verrrrry Important To Them

When we voted for my husband, we never thought it would lead to him losing his government job and the benefits he worked so hard to earn. It feels incredibly unfair and heartbreaking to see him go through this after everything he’s done for this country. First, he served in the military, dedicating years of his life to protecting and serving. After that, he started working for the government, putting in long hours and working tirelessly every single day. He’s always given his best, and we’ve always been proud of his dedication. But now, everything feels uncertain, and we don’t know what’s going to happen to our family.
Our story isn’t unique—there are so many families like ours who are facing the same fears. People who have worked hard, served their country, and now don’t know what their future holds. It’s scary not knowing how we’re going to pay our bills, put food on the table, or take care of our family. The Trump administration seems to see people like my husband as just numbers on a budget sheet, but we’re not numbers—we’re real people. We have lives, families, and responsibilities, just like everyone else. It’s devastating to think that after all the sacrifices we’ve made, we could be pushed aside just to save money.
I’ve supported Trump on many things, but this is where I have to stop. He’s lost my support over this. It’s not just about us—it’s about all the other families who are in the same situation. People who have worked hard, served their country, and now feel like they’re being forgotten. It’s not right, and it’s not fair. We deserve better than this. We deserve to be treated with respect and dignity, not tossed aside like we don’t matter. This isn’t the way things should be, and it’s time for those in power to remember that behind every decision, there are real people with real lives at stake.

We recently asked people in the BuzzFeed Community who voted for Donald Trump a question that was first asked in the r/AskPolitics subreddit: What could Donald Trump do to lose your support? The answers we received were eye-opening and, at times, troubling. Here are some of the responses:
- “If he keeps ignoring the laws of this country. We elected a president, not a king.”
—Anonymous - “If he doesn’t follow through on his promises to deport all undocumented immigrants, eliminate DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) programs, clean out the FBI, and ban transgender people, I’d stop supporting him.”
—Anonymous - “Trump lost my support on Inauguration Day when he failed to bring optimism, positivity, and hope to the country. Instead, he came across as a threat right away. I realized voting for him was a huge mistake.”
—Anonymous - “I’m from West Virginia, and his recent freeze on federal programs hurt my family and many of my friends. He’s already lost my support.”
—Anonymous - “The only thing that would make me unhappy with him is if he started bringing back liberal policies. I love what he’s doing right now!”
—Anonymous - “We voted for stronger border security. We didn’t vote for my husband to lose his government job and the benefits he worked so hard for. This is a real fear for many families right now. My husband has spent most of his life serving this country—first in the military and now in government work. I’ve watched him work tirelessly every day for this job. Our story is like so many others, yet the Trump administration sees us as just numbers on a budget sheet. We’re not numbers—we’re real people with families to feed. To be thrown aside to save money is disgusting. I’ve supported Trump on many things, but I can’t support him on this. He’s lost my support.”
—Anonymous - “I’m one year away from retirement at 65. I’m worried he’ll cut Social Security benefits before I can retire, forcing me to work until I’m 67 or even 70.”
—Anonymous - “If he somehow turned into Joe Biden.”
—Anonymous - “If he ruins the economy because of his arrogance or drags us into a war because he can’t control his words.”
—Anonymous - “He’s already lost my support for attacking federal workers who are veterans.”
—Anonymous - “If he ‘went woke,’ I’d stop supporting him. That’s it.”
—Anonymous - “I’ve supported Trump in every election, but I’ve never fully agreed with his border policies. As a native Floridian with a Panamanian mother, it’s hard for me to believe that all undocumented immigrants are a threat. I think he uses this as a scare tactic, especially for people in the Midwest or suburbs where there’s less diversity. I admire his business skills and toughness, and I know many immigrants contribute to making America great. But if his deportation policies start creating hate or violence against Hispanics, I’d stop supporting him. I hope we’re not kicking out smart, qualified people just because they speak Spanish or have brown skin. It’s hard to know who’s being deported and why, and it seems like most Republicans don’t care.”
—Anonymous - “If he keeps Elon Musk around.”
—Anonymous - “If he criticized JD Vance or tried to run for a third term, I’d stop supporting him. But I still think he’s better than the other options. At least he keeps his promises, whether they’re good or bad.”
—Anonymous - “I’d stop supporting Trump if he stopped prioritizing deportations, gave special treatment based on race, gender, or identity, or allowed children to be exposed to sexual content in schools.”
—Anonymous - “If he raises tariffs without boosting our gas and oil supply, causing prices to go back up to 2021–2022 levels, I’d be done with him.”
—Anonymous - “If he cuts programs like SNAP, Meals on Wheels, Head Start, or veteran services, I’d regret voting for him. It breaks my heart to think my vote might have contributed to that.”
—Anonymous - “If he doesn’t increase Social Security benefits, I’d support impeaching him.”
—Anonymous - “I’m a one-issue voter: border control. I’m all for raising the minimum wage, promoting contraceptives, or improving healthcare for the middle class. But when services for U.S. citizens are cut because of unchecked immigration, that’s where I draw the line.”
—Anonymous - “If he restricts gun rights more than his opponent, I’d stop supporting him. Gun control doesn’t work—it just disarms law-abiding citizens who need guns for protection or to stand up to a tyrannical government.”
—Anonymous - “If he doesn’t deliver tax cuts for lower- and middle-income workers, I’ll be very disappointed.”
—Anonymous - “If he gets the U.S. into another endless war.”
—Anonymous - “My mom, who supports Trump, said if he lifts sanctions on Russia, she’ll vote Democrat in the next election.”
—Anonymous - “If he doesn’t deport millions of migrants, both legal and illegal. He promised this in 2016 and didn’t deliver, so I didn’t vote for him in 2020 or 2024.”
—Anonymous - “He’s made big promises, like releasing the JFK files and deporting undocumented immigrants who commit violent crimes. He also promised not to impose federal restrictions on abortion. I want to see quick action on these issues in his first few months in office.”
—Anonymous - “If he taxes unrealized gains, regulates AI to benefit only big tech, or cracks down on cryptocurrency, I’d stop supporting him.”
—Anonymous - “If he fails to secure the borders or deport undocumented immigrants, or if he raises taxes and reduces U.S. energy production, causing higher fuel prices, I’d be done with him.”
