Former President Donald Trump’s new social media platform, Truth Social, has caused controversy once again after a post he made early Friday contained what some are calling a veiled threat of violence.
In the post, Trump wrote, “What kind of person can charge another person, in this case a former President of the United States, who got more votes than any sitting President in history, and leading candidate (by far!) for the Republican Party nomination, with a Crime, when it is known by all that NO Crime has been committed, & also known that potential death & destruction in such a false charge could be catastrophic for our Country?”
Trump’s comments were seen by some as a reference to the investigation into his conduct before and after the January 6, 2021, assault on the U.S. Capitol by his supporters. Trump has been accused of inciting the violence with his rhetoric and has faced calls for accountability.
The former president’s use of the phrase “potential death & destruction” was particularly concerning to some, as it echoed his language during the events leading up to the January 6 attack.
The post immediately drew criticism from Democrats and other opponents of Trump, who accused him of using violent language and attempting to intimidate those who might seek to hold him accountable.
Trump’s post comes as he continues to face multiple investigations into his conduct while in office, including a criminal probe by the Manhattan district attorney’s office and a civil investigation by the New York attorney general’s office.
In particular is the hush money probe, in which he is accused of paying off adult film actor Stormy Daniels to buy her silence about their past together.
With the investigations coming to a close and rumours that he might be indicted and arraigned in court, Trump has called on his supporters to protest and “take our nation back”
