If you grew up in a home where the difference between being morally right or wrong has been instilled in you for the most part of your life, chances are you have encountered the line “the end does not justify the means.” While it’s inarguably correct, it’s important to understand that some people just don’t have that many options – so they resort to doing things that could put their lives at risk. Yes, especially parents who are willing to do anything for their children. Just like a mom from the town of Hillsborough in North Carolina who had to steal at a grocery store for her children.

In 2017, Theresa West and her three adopted kids went on with their lives for three days without food on their table. So, she decided to go to some churches and other places she could go to seek help – to no avail.

Out of desperation, she decided to steal at a grocery store, getting whatever she could for her children even though she could not afford them.

West said she knew what she did was wrong but explained that she did it not for herself but for her kids.

West couldn’t go to work because she suffered from a traumatic brain injury, according to Good Morning Las Vegas.

“I had to go out and steal food, and that’s desperate, and I’m sorry for doing what I did but my kids were hungry,” she said.

When employees at the store caught West in the act, they immediately sent her plate number to the police for them to run it and find out more about her identity.

When the police arrived at her home, the police listened to her story where she admitted to stealing $36 worth of grocery items.

They then decided to investigate her claims. But instead of getting mocked or reprimanded for what she did, she earned the support of the police officers.

“I opened the refrigerator door and the freezer and all I was seeing was one pack of cheese,” Hillsborough Police Department Senior Corporal Keith Bradshaw said.

After witnessing West’s situation firsthand, Bradshaw said he knew he had to do something.

So, we said, ‘How can we help that and in the same sense help her so that she doesn’t have to feel that she has to go do those things?” Bradshaw remarked.

So, Bradshaw and his partner decided to buy groceries for West and her three children using money from their own pockets – and they spent a total of $140 dollars for all the goods they purchased from the store.

After West posted bail, she came home to a refrigerator full of food. Those who came across West’s story moved the hearts of many, prompting the Hillsborough Police to share where people could donate food for West and her family.

Based upon the overwhelming response, we are asking anyone who would like to donate food or funds to contact their local food bank or Social Services,” the Hillsborough Police Department wrote in a Facebook post.

Calling her experience a miracle, Wet said: “I’m struggling so hard to make it and just to have somebody to come help me is just been a miracle,” West said.
