The nonprofit organization Free Speech for People is leading a new campaign that is not tied to any political party. This campaign, called “Impeach Trump Again,” aims to gather support for the removal of former U.S. President Donald Trump. On Thursday, the group announced that their effort has already received over 100,000 signatures on a petition. This shows that many people are backing the idea of holding Trump accountable for his actions.
The campaign is urging Congress to start an impeachment investigation into Trump. The large number of signatures indicates that there is strong public support for such an investigation. Alexandra Flores-Quilty, the campaign director for Free Speech for People, stated on Thursday that the overwhelming support for impeachment proves that the American public is not willing to tolerate what she called “King Trump.” She emphasized the need for courageous leaders in Congress to stand up and hold Trump responsible for his abuses of power and to begin an impeachment inquiry.
The petition was launched on Inauguration Day (the day a new president is sworn into office). It calls on Congress to investigate Trump for several reasons, including possible violations of the U.S. Constitution’s emoluments clauses. These clauses prevent government officials from receiving profits or benefits from foreign or domestic governments beyond their official salary. The petition also points to Trump’s pardoning of individuals who participated in the January 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol, as well as his alleged unlawful and corrupt campaign practices.
This is not the first time Free Speech for People has pushed for Trump’s impeachment. The group also launched a similar campaign on the day of Trump’s inauguration in 2017, seeking to build public support for his removal even during his first term.
According to the watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, the emoluments clauses require Trump to fully separate himself from any businesses that profit from the federal or state governments. However, Trump has not done this. His business empire, which includes real estate, a social media platform, and even a cryptocurrency token, continues to operate, raising concerns about conflicts of interest.
The campaign also lists other alleged offenses that could justify impeachment. Trump was impeached twice by the House of Representatives during his first term—once for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, and a second time for incitement of insurrection following the Capitol riot. However, both times he was acquitted by the Senate, where his party held enough votes to block his removal. Now, with both the House and Senate controlled by Trump’s Republican Party, the chances of another impeachment succeeding are uncertain. Despite this, the campaign continues to push for accountability, arguing that Trump’s actions have undermined democracy and the rule of law.
