A body language expert has analyzed the last public meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, shedding light on the dynamics of their relationship. The two leaders last met publicly in Helsinki, Finland, in 2018, and their interactions have been scrutinized as Trump attempts to broker a peace deal between Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Trump has been vocal about his efforts, even publicly rebuking Zelensky in the Oval Office, while warning of further sanctions against Russia if they reject the proposed terms.
Body language specialist Judi James examined footage from the 2018 summit, noting that both leaders exhibit “alpha” leadership styles, often using physical strength and power displays to assert dominance. James observed that Trump initially presents himself as “cool” and “icy” toward Putin, aiming to project independence and strength. However, as the meeting progresses, Trump’s body language suggests a desire to establish rapport and shared objectives with the Russian leader.
James highlighted Trump’s initial stance for the cameras, describing it as a “grim poker face” with arms at his sides, signaling a refusal to concede any ground. She noted that Trump performs several “power-flexes,” such as gesturing to the press and sitting in a classic alpha pose with his hands in a downward steeple. However, once the initial power dynamics are established, Trump becomes more amicable, offering a “mouth-shrug smile” to break the ice.
Putin, on the other hand, appears relaxed and slightly amused, with “steepled” brows and a posture that includes resting his elbow on the chair arm. James pointed out that Putin seems to have studied Trump’s body language and is prepared for it, using firm eye contact and a strong handshake to assert his own power. She noted that Putin’s body language skills appear more “finely-honed and nuanced” compared to Trump’s.
The analysis comes as Putin responds to proposals for a 30-day ceasefire, which Ukraine has agreed to. While Putin has expressed support for the idea, he has also raised questions about ensuring an “enduring peace” and addressing the root causes of the conflict. Zelensky, however, has criticized Putin’s response as “manipulative” and called for additional sanctions against Russia.
Trump’s relationship with Putin has been a subject of speculation, particularly as the US president seeks to mediate peace in Ukraine. While Trump has emphasized the need for strong ties with Russia, critics have raised concerns about his closeness to Putin and the implications for US foreign policy. James’ analysis of their 2018 meeting offers a glimpse into the complex and often performative nature of their interactions, highlighting the power dynamics and subtle cues that define their relationship.
