Frank Caprio, the American judge who became famous around the world for showing kindness and compassion in his courtroom, has passed away at the age of 88 after battling pancreatic cancer.

Caprio served as a judge in Providence, Rhode Island, for nearly forty years. He stood out from many other TV judges because instead of being harsh and confrontational, he became known as “the nicest judge in the world.” His gentle way of handling cases, often with a smile, made him a viral sensation. Clips of him forgiving small fines and showing empathy to people who were struggling were watched more than a billion times on social media.

The final years of his career, before his retirement in 2023, were captured on the TV show Caught in Providence. Millions of people followed him online, and his Instagram page, with over 3 million followers, confirmed his death with a message describing him as a man who was loved for his humility, compassion, and belief in the goodness of people.

Just a day before his passing, Caprio had shared a heartfelt video from his hospital bed, telling his supporters that his health had worsened and asking once again for their prayers.

Some of his most memorable courtroom moments included dismissing a ticket for a struggling bartender who earned less than $4 an hour, and forgiving fines for a grieving mother whose son had been killed, after listening to her painful story with deep sympathy. These moments touched millions because they showed that he cared more about people’s humanity than just enforcing rules.

Caprio also used his platform to highlight bigger issues in the justice system. He often spoke out about inequality, noting that nearly 90% of low-income Americans have to face legal challenges such as eviction, health care battles, veterans’ benefits disputes, and traffic violations without proper legal help.

After news of his death, Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee honored him, saying Caprio was more than just a judge—he was a symbol of empathy and proof that justice could be fair without losing compassion.
