Donald Trump, 78, faced an awkward moment with his wife, Melania, 54, just before being sworn in as president for the second time. As the couple prepared for the ceremony in Washington, D.C., Mr. Trump leaned in to kiss Melania on the cheek but fell short, resulting in an “air kiss.”
Melania’s wide-brimmed hat played a part, shielding her face and making the gesture difficult. This moment was captured as part of the inauguration, which included appearances by the Bidens, former presidents, and celebrities. Singer Carrie Underwood also faced a mishap during her performance of “America The Beautiful.”
The Trumps have had similar moments in the past. At his 2017 inauguration, Mr. Trump appeared to forget about Melania, leaving her to walk alone as he greeted the Obamas. During that event, Melania was also spotted scowling at her husband, quickly smiling when he looked at her, only to grimace again once he turned away.
The couple’s relationship has often been under scrutiny. In 2017, during a visit to Israel, Melania appeared to push Mr. Trump’s hand away when he tried to hold it. Last year, she was notably absent from much of his campaign, though she supported him during the Republican National Convention.
Melania recently made headlines with her memoir, where she expressed support for abortion rights—a stance that contradicts her husband’s pro-life position. The couple has been married since 2005 and has one son, Barron, born in 2006.
