Experienced members of the intelligence community are warning US President Donald Trump that his approach to Ukraine’s war with Russia could be one of the biggest mistakes in US foreign policy. Trump is still figuring out how to handle the conflict, according to a former senior US intelligence official.

Earlier, Trump claimed he could end the war between Ukraine and Russia in just one day. However, he hasn’t shared the details of his plan, and it’s been nearly three years since he made that statement.

On Tuesday, Trump told reporters that his administration is talking to both Russians and Ukrainians, calling the discussions “very constructive.” But there’s no clear timeline for when his peace plan will be revealed.

Trump’s special envoy on the war, Keith Kellogg, told the New York Post on Thursday that he believes there are “some opportunities” to reach a deal. He even praised Trump’s deal-making skills, referencing Trump’s book *The Art of the Deal*. Kellogg said, “I wouldn’t put anything past him.”

Earlier, one of Trump’s allies denied reports that he would present a peace plan at the Munich Security Conference in Germany next week.

On Monday, Trump mentioned a potential deal where the US would continue supporting Ukraine in exchange for access to Ukraine’s rare earth minerals. “We’re looking to do a deal with Ukraine, where they’ll secure what we’re giving them with their rare earths and other things,” Trump said.

Reports suggest Trump is highly critical of former President Joe Biden’s approach to the war. Biden had promised to support Ukraine “as long as it takes.” Some worry Trump could drastically change this policy, especially since his freeze on foreign aid has already disrupted support for Ukraine.

The former intelligence official also compared a potential sudden withdrawal of US support for Ukraine to the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, calling it “the most significant betrayal in our nation’s national security history.” They warned, “This will be the Hungarian Revolution of our times in terms of US behavior.”
