According to Daily Mail on Thursday, August 31, 2023, an inquest was held to investigate the death of Dawn Walker, a mother of three from Bacup, Lancashire, who died in July 2020 after falling down the stairs at her home.
The incident occurred in June 2020 following an argument between Ms. Walker and her boyfriend Damien Taylor.
Ms. Walker’s best friend, Katie, testified that Mr. Taylor pushed Ms. Walker down the stairs, causing her to fall unconscious.
However, David Talbot, a friend of the couple who witnessed the incident, said he could not confirm whether Ms. Walker fell or was pushed.
According to David’s testimony, the couple had been arguing and Ms. Walker stabbed Mr. Taylor’s leg twice with a fork before pursuing him up the stairs.
As she reached the top step, Mr. Taylor said he tried to block her from stabbing him again, at which point she fell backwards down the stairs.
Mr. Taylor denied pushing Ms. Walker, stating that she lost her balance and fell.
He said he then left the house because Ms. Walker was banned from contacting him following her release from prison in 2019.
A Home Office pathologist could not definitively determine whether Ms. Walker was pushed or lost her balance.
The inquest heard that police did not feel there was sufficient evidence to charge Mr. Taylor over Ms. Walker’s death.
In May 2022, a Facebook post appeared on Mr. Taylor’s account stating he had pushed Ms. Walker in self-defense.
When questioned at the inquest, he denied writing the post but later admitted under pressure that he might have.
Ultimately, the coroner concluded it was most likely that Ms. Walker, in her intoxicated and emotionally charged state, lost her balance and fell accidentally.
Ms. Walker sustained severe brain trauma from the fall and remained unconscious until her death in hospital two weeks later in July 2020.
Her daughter paid tribute to Ms. Walker, stating that losing her mother at just 19 years old had left a hole in her heart.
The inquest heard Ms. Walker and Mr. Taylor had a turbulent ‘on-off’ relationship over several years. In 2017, Ms. Walker was jailed for stabbing Mr. Taylor but the couple resumed contact after her release.
Police said suspicions around Ms. Walker’s death arose quickly but a lack of definitive eyewitness testimony meant they could not take the case further against Mr. Taylor.
