Donald Trump finally committed the ‘unforgivable sin’ that voters ‘can’t tolerate’: GOP insider

A longtime Republican insider says Donald Trump has finally made the one mistake many voters can’t forgive  proving he’s not capable of doing the job well.

Peter Wehner, who worked for three different Republican presidents as a speechwriter, wrote in an opinion piece that Democrats should stop focusing so much on calling Trump corrupt or immoral, and instead point out that he’s simply not competent.

Wehner explained that millions of Americans voted for Trump believing he would be an effective leader. Even if they didn’t like that he was a convicted felon, his role in the January 6 Capitol attack, or his threats to democracy, they still thought he could get things done and make the country stronger. Many were willing to overlook his faults because they expected results.

Earlier polls even showed that independent voters thought Trump’s administration would be better at achieving goals than Biden’s, even if they trusted Biden more to tell the truth.

But according to Wehner, that perception has now collapsed. Just over half a year into Trump’s second term, a new AP/NORC poll shows only about 25% of Americans think his policies have helped them.

Around half say his policies have actually hurt them, and about 20% say they’ve noticed no difference. Trump didn’t score a majority approval on any major issue  not the economy, immigration, or government spending.

As a result, his approval rating has dropped to 37% the lowest of his current term and close to his all-time low of 34% at the end of his first term. Among independents, his approval is just 29%. Wehner says Americans have long accepted that Trump is corrupt, but now more people believe he’s ineffective. In U.S. politics, he says, incompetence is the one thing voters can’t tolerate.

Wehner also pointed to Trump’s decisions on trade as part of what’s fueling this growing negative view of him.
