President Donald Trump is facing his first real threat of impeachment in his second term after a lawmaker called for action on Wednesday.
Rep. Al Green, a Democrat from Texas, announced, “The movement to impeach the president has begun.” He said he is pushing for impeachment because of Trump’s comments and actions regarding Israel and Gaza.
Trump met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House on Tuesday. During their press conference, Trump said the U.S. might send troops to take control of Gaza if necessary and suggested that Palestinians should be moved to neighboring countries.
Trump insisted that a “new way of thinking” was needed and even promised to turn Gaza into “the Riviera of the Middle East.”
Rep. Green strongly condemned Trump’s remarks, saying, “Ethnic cleansing in Gaza is not a joke, especially when it comes from the President of the United States.” He also criticized Netanyahu, saying, “The Prime Minister of Israel should be ashamed.”
Green warned that what happens in Gaza could affect justice in the U.S., stating, “Injustice in Gaza is a threat to justice in the United States.”
Trump was impeached twice during his first term but was acquitted both times.
