A petition calling for Congress to impeach President Donald Trump has gained over 250,000 signatures, showing how divided the country remains during his second term. The petition was started by a group called Free Speech for People on the day of Trump’s inauguration, January 20, 2025.
It lists several reasons why they believe Trump should be impeached, including his decision to pardon people involved in the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, his efforts to end birthright citizenship, and his controversial comments about Gaza.
One of the most talked-about issues is Trump’s suggestion that the U.S. could “take over” the Gaza Strip after a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. He proposed rebuilding the area and turning it into the “Riviera of the Middle East,” which some critics, like Texas Representative Al Green, have called a form of “ethnic cleansing.” Green has promised to bring articles of impeachment against Trump but hasn’t filed them yet. He was recently censured by the House for interrupting Trump during a speech to Congress.
The petition also accuses Trump of abusing his power by targeting political enemies and trying to drastically cut federal spending. Supporters of the petition argue that Trump’s actions pose a serious threat to democracy and the Constitution.
However, impeachment is unlikely to succeed because Republicans control both the House and Senate, and they would need to vote in favor of it. Trump was impeached twice during his first term but was acquitted both times by the Senate.
The growing support for the petition reflects the deep political divisions in the U.S., with many people strongly opposed to Trump’s policies and behavior. At the same time, Trump’s supporters remain loyal, and he has dismissed the impeachment efforts as another “sham” by his opponents. As the debate continues, the possibility of impeachment remains a long shot, but it highlights the ongoing tensions in American politics.
