Donald Trump officially started his second term as President of the United States in January 2025. At the same time, JD Vance moved up in politics. He is a 40-year-old politician from Ohio and a former Marine Corps veteran. Now, he serves as the 50th Vice President of the country. Vance and Trump have similar political views, including their opposition to abortion and same-s—x marriage. However, despite their shared beliefs, Trump does not see Vance as the person to take his place in the 2028 election.
During an interview with Fox News, host Bret Baier asked Trump if he would support JD Vance in the next presidential race. Trump answered with a direct “No.” He did say that Vance is a very capable person, but he also added, “I think you have a lot of very capable people. So far, I think he’s doing a fantastic job. It’s too early, we’re just starting.”
Trump also spoke about how much his administration had accomplished in just three weeks, saying, “We have done so much, so fast, and we had to because what they (Democrats) have done to our country is so sad.” While he praised Vance for working well with him, his comments about the Vice President’s future in politics seemed a little dismissive. Many people reacted to it online.
One person on social media wrote, “Damn, that was brutal… honest, but still brutal!” Another person responded with sarcasm, saying, “Honesty isn’t always the best policy.” Someone else joked, “Dayum! Fastest ‘no’ in the West!”
Some people believe that Trump avoided fully answering the question because he has no plans to leave office. Over the years, he has hinted at wanting to serve a third term. Just one week after starting his second term as President, he told House Republicans, “I’ve raised a lot of money for the next race that I assume I can’t use for myself, but I’m not 100% sure,” according to NBC News.
However, the U.S. Constitution does not allow him to run again. The 22nd Amendment clearly states that no person can be elected as President more than twice. Even though the law is firm, some politicians are trying to change it so that Trump can run again in 2028.
Republican Representative Andy Ogles has proposed a change to the current two-term limit. He argued that Trump is the only leader in modern history who can fix the country’s problems and must be given more time to do so. His proposal suggests that a President can serve three terms, but the way it is written would prevent the other four living ex-presidents from running again. The rule he introduced states, “No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than three times, nor be elected to any additional term after being elected to two consecutive terms.”
Ogles believes it is necessary to give Trump every possible resource to undo what he calls the “damage” done by the Biden administration. While the idea of Trump serving a third term is being discussed, changing the Constitution is extremely difficult and would require strong support from both Congress and the American people.
