Democrats warned that Trump’s new order could hurt programs that millions of Americans rely on, such as food and rent assistance and programs for young children.

On Monday, President Donald Trump issued a broad memo directing the federal government to stop giving grants, loans, and other financial aid. This decision could impact many services across the country.

Matthew J. Vaeth, acting director of the White House Office of Management and Budget, said in the memo that federal agencies should pause these programs temporarily. He explained this pause is to make sure they align with Trump’s policies, including bans on diversity and inclusion efforts and restrictions on clean energy spending.

Vaeth wrote, “The American people elected Trump to make every federal tax dollar count. Using federal funds for things like equity, transgender issues, and green energy policies wastes money and doesn’t help everyday people.”

The memo also stated the order would not affect Social Security, Medicare, or financial help given directly to individuals, according to *The Washington Post*.

Democrats argued that this policy could cause serious harm to important programs for families, children, and communities. Senator Chuck Schumer said, “They say it’s temporary, but don’t believe it. Trump needs to reverse this immediately so taxpayer money goes to the people.”

Schumer warned that stopping these funds would cause missed paychecks, unpaid rent, and problems for schools, charities, and other organizations.

This is not the first time Trump has paused government funds. Last week, he ordered agencies to stop spending money on climate initiatives, infrastructure projects, and foreign aid, despite Congress approving those funds. Critics say this move ignores Congress’s constitutional authority to manage federal spending.

Over the weekend, Trump also fired 18 inspectors general, who are supposed to monitor government corruption. He did this without notifying Congress, which critics called a “disturbing purge.”

Experts predict Trump’s actions will face legal challenges. However, many believe these orders are part of an effort to take more power during his presidency.
