“Elon Musk Threatens Legal Action Over ‘Misleading’ Headlines About Tesla Cybertruck Explosion

Tesla CEO Elon Musk said he might sue media outlets over how they reported the Cybertruck explosion outside the Trump Hotel in Las Vegas on Wednesday.

Conservative activist Robby Starbuck suggested on X (formerly Twitter) that Musk should sue media outlets for their headlines. He shared a screenshot of a Business Insider article that referred to the incident as a “Cybertruck explosion.” Starbuck argued that such headlines harm Tesla’s reputation by making people think the truck caught fire. He pointed out that Tesla vehicles have far fewer fires compared to other cars.

Musk responded to the suggestion, saying, “Maybe it is time to do so.”

The explosion on Wednesday morning killed the driver, an Army special operations soldier, and injured seven bystanders. Authorities discovered fireworks, mortars, and gas canisters in the truck. Sheriff Kevin McMahill said during a press conference that the Cybertruck’s design helped limit damage, directing the blast upwards and sparing nearby structures.

Musk shared the sheriff’s comments and criticized the media for misleading coverage. He posted on X: “The Cybertruck actually contained the explosion and directed the blast upwards. Not even the glass doors of the lobby were broken.”

Business Insider declined to comment on the matter.
