Ex-GOP Congressman Blasts Trump’s Team as ‘Dumbest People’ Picked for Their ‘Spineless Sycophancy

Justin Amash, who used to represent Michigan in the U.S. House of Representatives, publicly criticized former President Donald Trump and the officials he placed in powerful positions. Amash made his comments in a post on the social media platform X, where he expressed frustration and concern about what he sees as a serious lack of competence and understanding among the people running the country under Trump’s leadership.

He didn’t hold back, calling them “the dumbest people” and saying this wasn’t just a coincidence or a simple mistake. In his view, these individuals weren’t chosen because they were smart, experienced, or had a strong understanding of the Constitution.

Instead, they were picked because they were completely loyal to Trump and willing to do whatever he wanted without question. According to Amash, these were people who lacked the courage to stand up for what’s right and simply followed orders, even if it meant ignoring important constitutional principles.

Amash’s comments were triggered by a particularly troubling incident involving Kristi Noem, who serves as the Secretary of Homeland Security. During a Senate hearing, she was asked to explain the meaning of “habeas corpus,” a basic and very important concept in American law that protects people from being imprisoned without a valid reason. It ensures that the government can’t just lock someone up without showing a legal basis for doing so.

Noem’s response showed that she didn’t understand the term at all, and she gave an answer that had nothing to do with its actual meaning. This prompted Senator Maggie Hassan from New Hampshire, a Democrat, to correct her and explain what the term really means.

The exchange left many people stunned. For someone in such a powerful role especially one tied to law enforcement and national security not knowing something so fundamental about the Constitution was deeply concerning.

It suggested, at least to Amash and others, that key leaders in the government were not only unqualified, but also dangerously uninformed about the rights and protections that are supposed to guide their decisions.

Amash was so disturbed by the situation that he shared a quote from Friedrich Hayek, an economist and political philosopher widely respected among libertarians. The quote underscored his point that systems built on loyalty and obedience, rather than knowledge and principle, are bound to produce poor leadership and harmful outcomes.

Justin Amash’s frustration didn’t come out of nowhere. He spent ten years in Congress and began his political career as a Republican. However, during Trump’s time in office, Amash became increasingly uncomfortable with the direction of the party. He criticized Trump openly, especially when he believed the president was ignoring the Constitution or abusing his power.

Eventually, Amash left the Republican Party, saying it no longer reflected his values. He became an independent and later joined the Libertarian Party, making history as the first and only Libertarian ever to serve in Congress.

In recent years, Amash tried to re-enter the political scene through the Republican Party again. He ran for a U.S. Senate seat but was unsuccessful, losing in the primary.

Despite stepping back from office, he continues to speak out when he feels the government is straying from its core principles especially when it comes to upholding constitutional rights and putting capable, knowledgeable people in positions of authority. His latest comments show that he still believes strongly in holding leaders accountable and ensuring that those in power truly understand the laws and values they are supposed to protect.
