In His Final Oval Office Address, Joe Biden Delivers a Powerful Warning, “The Real Power Lies With a Handful of The Ultra-Rich”
When Joe Biden ran for President, he pledged to “restore the soul” of America after four years of Donald Trump’s divisive and turbulent leadership. Now, just days away from handing the Oval Office back to Trump, Biden says his work for the country remains unfinished.
In a 20-minute farewell address on Wednesday night, Biden shared his optimism about his vision for America but raised alarms about the growing power of a “tech-industrial complex” spreading misinformation for profit. He also called for an end to anonymous political donations.
“Today, an oligarchy is forming in America—one of extreme wealth and influence—that threatens our democracy, our basic freedoms, and fair opportunities for everyone,” Biden warned.
While he didn’t directly name Elon Musk or other billionaires who supported Trump’s return, Biden addressed their influence. Drawing a historical parallel, he noted how Americans once stood up to “robber barons” and insisted that the wealthy follow the rules. “They didn’t punish the wealthy; they made the wealthy play fair,” Biden said.
Seated at the Resolute Desk for his prime-time speech, Biden reflected on his administration’s achievements, such as jumpstarting the economy after the pandemic, boosting American manufacturing, creating millions of jobs, and steering the industrial sector toward cleaner energy. He emphasized that the U.S. doesn’t have to choose between economic growth and environmental protection. “We’re doing both,” he declared.
Biden also touched on cultural and political shifts that he believes are weakening the influence of working Americans. He criticized social media platforms, including Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta and Elon Musk’s X, for allowing misinformation to thrive under the guise of free speech.
“The truth is being buried under lies told for power and profit,” Biden said. “Americans are drowning in misinformation, enabling the abuse of power. The free press is crumbling, and social media has abandoned fact-checking.”
Biden proposed specific solutions to address these issues. He advocated for 18-year term limits for Supreme Court justices and called for eliminating “dark money” in campaign financing. He also stressed the need to regulate artificial intelligence, which he said could have enormous benefits, like advancing cancer treatments, but must be used responsibly to protect fundamental rights.
After nearly 50 years in public service, Biden bid farewell and wished his successor success. He affirmed his commitment to ensuring a peaceful transition of power. “The strength of our institutions and the character of our people matter and must endure,” Biden said, leaving Americans with a final challenge: “It’s your turn to stand guard.”
