Actor Diego Luna ended his week as the guest host of Jimmy Kimmel Liveby using humor to send a clear message about how to deal with powerful leaders who act in controlling or authoritarian ways, like former President Donald Trump. Luna made the point that comedy can be a powerful tool when facing political figures who try to limit freedom or silence criticism.
He explained that one effective way to resist these kinds of leaders is simply by making fun of them. Joking about them, pointing out their flaws through humor, and laughing at their actions helps take away their power. He praised Jimmy Kimmel for doing exactly that—using comedy night after night to challenge authority and stand up for freedom. According to Luna, authoritarian figures hate being laughed at because they want to be taken seriously and feared. Humor disrupts that control.
He also touched on how the media often emphasizes the differences between his home country, Mexico, and the United States. But Luna wanted to remind people of what unites the two countries—shared culture, values, and connections that go beyond politics. He said cultural exchange shouldn’t be blocked or separated by borders, fear, or misinformation, and definitely not by a physical wall.
Luna then took a jab at former President Trump’s infamous promise to build a border wall and have Mexico pay for it. With a bit of dry humor, he pointed out that not only did Mexico never pay for the wall, but it ended up costing American taxpayers around \$15 billion. And in the end, much of the wall was so poorly constructed that sections of it blew down in strong winds or were so easy to climb that people got past it with a cheap homemade ladder.
By using wit and honesty, Luna showed how comedy can cut through political nonsense and highlight the truth. He reminded viewers that laughter can be a form of resistance, and that shared humanity matters more than fear-driven divisions.
