Melania Trump created a stir during Donald Trump’s inauguration this afternoon with what some are calling an “awkward moment” as she greeted her husband.
The incoming first lady looked elegant in a custom coat and skirt set, topped off with a dramatic oversized hat. However, the hat became the center of attention when Donald Trump leaned in for a cheek kiss, only to be thwarted by its wide brim.
Body language expert Mark Bowden commented on the exchange, saying, “Trump finding it hard to get in a kiss with Melania as her hat shields her from him and us. The hat is quite a distancing mechanism.
” Bowden suggested the incident could have been avoided with more planning: “Clearly, they had not rehearsed the idea of that happening as she may have chosen a different hat.”
The moment didn’t go unnoticed on social media. One X user joked, “NOW I know why Melania wore such a wide-brimmed hat! It was to keep Donald from actually touching her when he went in for the cheek kiss.” Another quipped, “Melania did not want that kiss, and she was successful.”
Whether it was intentional or accidental, the hat has now become the symbol of an already viral inauguration moment.
