Mexican president issues scathing response to Trump’s offer to dispatch US troops across border to tackle cartels

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum recently spoke about a phone call she had with former U.S. President Donald Trump. The conversation lasted around 45 minutes, and she described it as very positive. Even though there are some tensions between the two countries, especially around issues like drug trafficking and trade, the call itself was respectful and focused on finding common ground.

During the call, Trump brought up the problem of drug trafficking and offered a strong suggestion. He said the United States could send its military into Mexico to help fight the drug cartels.

This wasn’t the first time Trump had talked about using the U.S. military in this way. In the past, he had taken tough actions toward Mexico, like placing tariffs on Mexican goods and making strong statements about border security.

Sheinbaum, however, didn’t agree with Trump’s offer. She told him clearly that Mexico’s land is sacred, and the country’s independence is very important. She said Mexico will never accept having foreign soldiers, even if they are offering help, operating on its soil.

She said, “Our territory and our independence are not for sale. We love and defend them.” Her message to Trump was that both countries could work together, but they must do it while respecting each other’s space — Mexico handles things in its own land, and the U.S. does the same in its own territory.

Sheinbaum later spoke about this publicly at a university event near Mexico City. She repeated what she had told Trump and explained that while cooperation is possible, it must come with mutual respect and without violating Mexico’s sovereignty.

A spokesperson from the White House also commented on the call. He said that both Trump and Sheinbaum want to make the U.S.-Mexico border more secure and that there’s a lot of cooperation happening between the two countries already.

However, he also said that dangerous criminal groups are still a threat, and the U.S. believes Mexico needs to do more to fight them. The U.S. says it’s ready to keep helping but wants stronger action on the Mexican side too.

The two leaders didn’t only talk about security. They also discussed trade. Sheinbaum later posted on Twitter that they talked about improving the trade relationship between the two countries.

They agreed that their financial and economic teams would keep working on ideas to make trade better and fairer. Although they didn’t make any final deals yet, Sheinbaum said it was important that both sides are willing to keep talking and working toward better agreements that help both the U.S. and Mexico.

In the end, Sheinbaum made it clear that while she’s open to working with the United States, she won’t allow any foreign military on Mexican soil. She believes in cooperation, but only if it respects Mexico’s independence. Her message was strong but polite, showing that Mexico wants partnership, not interference.
