New poll reveals massive shift in Trump’s approval on major issue

A new poll shows that more Americans are turning away from Donald Trump’s immigration policies. The Quinnipiac University Poll found that 64% of people in the U.S. now support giving most undocumented immigrants a chance to stay in the country legally, instead of being deported. Only 31% believe that most undocumented immigrants should be removed from the country.

This is a noticeable change from six months ago, when 55% of people supported legal status for undocumented immigrants, and 36% supported deportation. The growing support for legalization shows that opinions are shifting.

According to Quinnipiac’s polling expert Tim Malloy, voters are clearly unhappy with how deportations are being carried out and want a more humane approach that allows undocumented immigrants to stay legally.

Greg Sargent from The New Republic pointed out that the change in public opinion is significant  a 14-point swing since the beginning of Trump’s presidency. He emphasized that support for legalizing undocumented immigrants is rising while support for mass deportations is dropping. He also noted that Trump’s overall approval on immigration is low, with only 41% of people backing his handling of the issue, while 57% disapprove.

The poll also shows that views on immigration are sharply divided by political party. Most Republicans, about 61%, still support deporting undocumented immigrants. On the other hand, 89% of Democrats support a path to legal status.

Trump has been pushing a strong crackdown on undocumented immigrants, with thousands already arrested and deported. His adviser, Stephen Miller, who helped shape the immigration strategy, reportedly wants 3,000 arrests per day of people living in the U.S. without legal permission.

Many voters are also unhappy with how ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) is handling deportations. The poll shows that 56% of voters disapprove of ICE’s actions, while only 39% approve. Among Republicans, 77% still support ICE’s handling of deportations.

There’s also backlash against Trump’s decision to send the National Guard and Marines to Los Angeles earlier in the month to respond to protests against immigration raids. More than half of voters disagreed with this move.

Although immigration was once one of Trump’s strongest political issues  with his promises to build a wall and carry out mass deportations  recent events have sparked widespread protests across the country, showing growing opposition.

In the same poll, Trump’s overall approval rating stood at 41%, with 54% of people saying they disapproved of his performance as president.

This poll was taken between June 22 and 24, surveying 979 registered voters. The margin of error is about 3.1 percentage points.
