With the New York City mayoral election only days away, Donald Trump has once again stirred controversy with his comments about one of the candidates, Zohran Mamdani. Many people were left confused and shocked by what the former president said, calling his response “delusional” and “narcissistic,” while others saw it as a harmless joke.

The moment happened during a recent episode of 60 Minutes, when journalist Norah O’Donnell asked Trump about the upcoming NYC mayoral race scheduled for Tuesday, November 4. As she began to mention Zohran Mamdani—a 34-year-old Democratic Socialist—Trump quickly interrupted her, saying, “Communist, not a socialist. He’s a communist. He’s far worse than a socialist.” His tone was blunt, dismissive, and typical of his brash political style.

O’Donnell tried to continue, pointing out that some people have compared Mamdani to Trump himself, saying both men are charismatic and known for breaking the usual political rules. Trump responded instantly, with a smirk, “Well, I think I’m a much better-looking person than him, right?”

The exchange immediately went viral online. Many viewers found Trump’s comment strange and self-centered, with social media users accusing him of being out of touch with reality. One person wrote that it was “delusional” for a 78-year-old man to compare himself to a 35-year-old candidate in terms of looks. Another commented that Trump’s obsession with appearances showed just how “narcissistic” he is.

But not everyone saw it as an insult. Some of Trump’s supporters argued that the remark was meant as a joke—a moment of humor rather than arrogance. One user explained that the comment was “clearly sarcastic,” suggesting that Trump was teasing himself by pretending to compare his looks to a much younger man. They argued that critics were overreacting and that getting upset over something so trivial only makes Trump’s opponents seem humorless and overly sensitive.

Meanwhile, Zohran Mamdani continues his campaign to become New York City’s first Muslim mayor, an achievement that would mark a major milestone in the city’s political history. Mamdani currently serves as a New York State Assemblyman and has earned attention for his progressive policies and his focus on social justice.

Born in Kampala, Uganda, Mamdani moved to the United States with his family as a child and has lived in New York City since he was seven years old. He attended the Bronx High School of Science and later graduated from Bowdoin College in Maine, where he majored in Africana Studies in 2014. During his college years, he helped launch a campus chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine, showing his early interest in activism and community organization.

Throughout his mayoral campaign, Mamdani has focused on policies that aim to help working-class New Yorkers and marginalized communities. His key proposals include free bus travel across the city, universal childcare for children from six weeks to five years old, and stronger rent regulations to hold negligent landlords accountable.

Mamdani has also tried to connect with New York’s diverse communities through language and culture. One of his campaign videos is entirely in Urdu and features clips inspired by Bollywood films. In another, he speaks Spanish, and just before election week, he released an advertisement completely in Arabic, showing his effort to reach voters of all backgrounds.

His campaign presents him as a man deeply connected to the people of New York—a city defined by its diversity and constant change. On his official assembly profile, Mamdani describes his life as one of creativity, community organizing, and resilience. He has worked in film, rap, and writing, but it’s activism that has always brought him back to public service.

As election day approaches, Zohran Mamdani stands at the crossroads of history, while Donald Trump’s comments have once again shifted attention toward the drama of personality and politics. Whether people view Trump’s remarks as an insult, a joke, or simply another example of his unpredictable style, one thing is clear: in the high-stakes world of American politics, even a lighthearted comment can spark nationwide debate.
