Pope Leo XIV’s brother shares his stance on Trump’s policies and why he ‘won’t stay silent’

It looks like the new pope, Leo XIV, isn’t a big fan of some of Donald Trump’s most hardline policies—especially when it comes to immigration. And now, his older brother, John Prevost, is speaking up and sharing more about how Pope Leo really feels.

John, who used to be a Catholic school principal, recently spoke to the *New York Times* about his brother’s views and personality. He said Pope Leo takes a balanced, middle-of-the-road approach when it comes to politics. He’s not someone who leans too far in any direction. But John made it clear that his brother isn’t the type to stay quiet if he sees something wrong—especially when it comes to immigration issues. According to him, Pope Leo is clearly not okay with the current situation and probably won’t stay silent about it for long.

Pope Leo XIV, formerly Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, is originally from Chicago and is the first American to become pope. Before being elected, he spent many years doing missionary work in Peru. He also speaks several languages and is known for being deeply committed to helping people. Even though he’s now in one of the most powerful positions in the Catholic Church, people are still trying to figure out exactly where he stands on big global issues.

There were already some clues before his brother spoke out. For example, Pope Leo had reposted a tweet that criticized Trump, and in his first speech as pope, he talked about the dangers of putting too much trust in technology, money, and power. He also referred to global human rights problems and the ways people are being mistreated around the world.

John shared some personal details, too—like how Pope Leo likes to watch the movie *Conclave* in his free time. But more importantly, he thinks his brother will continue the legacy of Pope Francis, who was known for being one of the most progressive leaders in the church. Back in 2016, Pope Francis criticized Trump’s idea of building a wall at the U.S.-Mexico border, saying that building walls instead of bridges goes against Christian values. He also condemned Trump’s deportation plans as harmful to human dignity.

In the same spirit, Pope Leo seems ready to speak up about similar issues. In his first mass, he emphasized the importance of staying true to faith and standing up against injustice and the ways people are being dehumanized in today’s world.
