Vladimir Putin spoke on Thursday, March 27, at the International Arctic Forum. He said that he will keep defending Russia’s interests in the Arctic. According to him, Russia is not only focused on nearby European countries but also paying attention to what’s happening in the Arctic region. He made it clear that the Arctic is important to Russia, both for its resources and its strategic position in the world.

During his speech, Putin accused NATO countries of trying to turn the far north into a place where future conflicts might begin. He said that NATO has been increasing its military presence in the Arctic by holding military exercises there. He didn’t mention any specific countries, but he warned that Russia is watching everything closely. He also said that Russia has never threatened anyone in the Arctic, but they will not sit back and do nothing if they feel their country is in danger.

Putin explained that Russia will respond by increasing its military presence in the Arctic. He said they are improving their military infrastructure and making sure they are ready to defend themselves if needed. He added that Russia won’t allow any country to interfere with its independence or challenge its control over its own land. According to him, Russia will always protect its national interests.

In an unexpected part of his speech, Putin also talked about former U.S. President Donald Trump and his repeated statements about wanting to make Greenland part of the United States. Even though many people think Trump was just joking or being unrealistic, Putin said those comments should be taken seriously. He mentioned that the idea of the U.S. taking over Greenland actually started back in the 1860s, but at the time, it was rejected by the U.S. Congress.

Putin said it would be a mistake to think that Trump’s comments are just strange ideas with no real meaning. He believes the U.S. has a long-standing interest in the Arctic and that it is likely to keep trying to grow its power in that area, not just for military reasons but also for political and economic gain. As for Greenland, Putin said it’s an issue between Denmark and the United States and doesn’t directly involve Russia. Still, he said Russia is concerned that NATO is increasingly treating the Arctic as a place where serious conflicts could begin.

Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark, but it governs itself in many ways. Trump said the U.S. should own Greenland because it would help with both national and global security. However, both the Danish government and Greenlandic leaders have clearly said that Greenland is not for sale.

Despite their refusal, Trump still believes that the U.S. might end up owning Greenland someday. While speaking to reporters next to NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, Trump said he thinks it could happen. He mentioned a story about a boat that landed in Greenland about 200 years ago and claimed that gave the U.S. some right to it. However, he admitted he’s not sure if that story is even true.
