Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has issued a stark warning to his constituents following President Donald Trump’s latest executive order aimed at eliminating the Department of Education.

Walz, a former teacher and outspoken critic of the Trump administration, expressed deep concern over the potential impact on students and educators across the United States.

In a statement on MSNBC, Walz urged Americans to prepare for the worst, saying, “I think we have to assume the very worst.” He criticized the move as contrary to the principles on which America was founded, emphasizing the importance of a robust federal role in education.

The executive order, signed by Trump on Thursday, directs Education Secretary Linda McMahon to take steps toward closing the department and returning education authority to the states. While the complete elimination of the department requires congressional approval, the order marks a significant step toward dismantling the federal agency.

Walz, who ran alongside Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 campaign, has been vocal in his opposition to the Trump administration since leaving the campaign trail. He accused Trump of lacking a coherent plan and understanding of how government works, calling him a “caricature” who “doesn’t know how anything works.”

The order follows recent layoffs within the Department of Education, described as the “first step” in its eventual closure. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt clarified that the department would continue to administer student loans, Pell grants, and enforce certain civil rights laws, but its overall size and scope would be dramatically reduced.

Walz’s comments reflect broader concerns among Democrats and education advocates about the potential consequences of eliminating the Department of Education. Critics argue that such a move could undermine federal support for public schools, exacerbate educational inequalities, and disrupt critical programs that benefit millions of students.

What do you think about Trump’s executive order to eliminate the Department of Education? Should education authority be returned to the states, or is a federal role essential for ensuring equity and support? Let us know in the comments.
