Trump supporter Rep. Mary Miller (R-IL) misgendered Rep. Sarah McBride (D-DE) during a House session. Miller referred to McBride as “The Gentleman from Delaware, Mr. McBride.”
Miller was leading the House session on Thursday morning, where members can give speeches. McBride, the first openly transgender woman elected to Congress in November, has faced harassment from Republicans like Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC). Despite the misgendering, McBride quickly responded by criticizing former President Donald Trump and his administration for five minutes.
Rep. Mary Miller: The chair recognizes the gentleman from Delaware, Mr. McBride, for five minutes.
Rep. Sarah McBride: Thank you, Madam Speaker.
McBride then spoke:
When I was elected, I promised to work with anyone who would help Delaware and its people, and to stand up against anyone who tries to harm our state.
Instead of working together, the Trump administration has consistently attacked working people in Delaware and across the country. They’ve tried to cut funding for first responders, domestic violence shelters, schools, and healthcare facilities that many people depend on.
Last week, as I traveled around Delaware meeting with seniors, military families, students, mayors, doctors, and nurses, I could see how scared and angry people were. They were worried about the administration’s funding cuts.
For example, a senior center in Delaware was concerned they might not be able to provide meals to the people they serve. Programs to prevent opioid addiction could stop working. Research projects in Delaware that create jobs have already been paused, putting those jobs at risk.
Mayors were worried they wouldn’t be able to pay first responders or continue important projects like improving water and transportation systems. Hospitals and clinics in rural and urban areas, which serve some of the most vulnerable people, weren’t sure if they could keep operating.
All of these services rely on federal funds that Congress approved and the president signed into law. But the Trump administration is threatening to freeze these funds illegally, which would hurt many people who depend on these services.
These actions have caused chaos in Delaware and across the country, and that seems to be the goal. Recent attacks on public servants and programs like USAID not only risk our global security and health but also set the stage for cutting federal support for education, healthcare, housing, childcare, and workers’ rights.
If the administration can do this to USAID, they can do it to any part of the government. No program or department is safe. This week, it’s USAID. Tomorrow, it could be the Departments of Education or Labor. Eventually, even Social Security and Medicare could be at risk.
The Trump administration is cutting funding for important services, firing employees, and weakening programs that people in Delaware rely on. They’re trying to shrink the federal government and benefit their donors at the expense of working people. It’s clear they don’t want to solve problems or make the government work better. They want to prove government doesn’t work by making it fail.
In 1941, President Franklin Roosevelt said that people who lack basic needs cannot be free, and democracies cannot survive if people are hungry or unemployed. The Trump administration wants Americans to be hungry, scared, and angry because that’s how they stay in power.
The people of Delaware reject this cycle of chaos, corruption, and cynicism. They sent me to Congress to make government work better for everyone, not to make it worse. Delawareans want a government that helps people learn, live, and thrive. That’s what I’m here to do.
