Donald Trump recently spoke out about the rising cost of goods in the United States, especially the price of eggs. He claimed prices are going down, even though many Americans feel they’re paying more than ever.
Since Trump introduced a lot of new tariffs—extra taxes on goods coming into the U.S.—the prices of many everyday items have gone up. His goal was to boost the U.S. economy by taxing foreign products, but things haven’t gone as planned. Earlier this month, he announced a new 10% tax on all goods from other countries, with even higher taxes for about 60 countries that he labeled as the “worst offenders.”
This move upset several nations, especially China, which responded by raising its own tariffs on American goods. The back-and-forth between the two countries has turned into a trade war, and now it’s costing American businesses and consumers a lot of money. Stock markets in the U.S. have taken a hit, and experts say these tariffs could end up costing Americans billions.
Despite all of this, Trump continues to say that prices are going down. He posted on his social media site, Truth Social, claiming that the U.S. is making record money from tariffs and that prices for things like groceries, gasoline, and more are falling. He also said that inflation is decreasing, and called it a promise kept.
But the reality for many Americans is different. Prices of essential items have gone up, and people are being warned to stock up before they rise even more. Eggs, however, seem to be an exception—at least according to Trump.
On April 18, Trump told reporters that the Agriculture Secretary, Brooke Rollins, is doing a great job. He said egg prices have dropped by 87%, though he claimed no one is talking about it. He joked that there are too many eggs and that prices are actually becoming too low. He added, “You can have all the eggs you want.”
But government data tells a different story. The Department of Agriculture reported that the wholesale price of eggs was $3.13 on April 19, which is actually up from the previous week. In February, the average price was $5.90, and in March it hit a record high of $6.23 due to an outbreak of bird flu.
Even though prices have come down a little since then, they’re still high compared to earlier years. The Department of Agriculture explained that while prices are no longer as extreme as they were earlier in the year, they’re still too high for most people to buy as much as they normally would.
Trump also brought up how people criticized him about egg prices early in his presidency. He said that back then, prices were already high, and he had just taken office. He remembered people warning that there wouldn’t be enough eggs for Easter. But now, he says, there are plenty.
Trump’s claims about falling prices on groceries and gas haven’t been well received online. Many people on social media are questioning whether his statements reflect what’s really happening in their daily lives.
