President Donald Trump’s White House faced criticism and mockery on Sunday after releasing a statement with a spelling error.
Over the weekend, Trump made a sudden decision to impose tariffs on Colombia after reports that migrant flights were turned away. Colombia responded with its own measures, and some fear this back-and-forth could lead to a trade war.
During this exchange, the White House issued a statement referencing Trump’s post on Truth Social. However, they misspelled Colombia as “Columbia” in the press release.
Journalist Aaron Rupar jokingly responded, “I’m more of a North Face guy, but this seems a bit extreme,” referencing the famous clothing brand.
Anti-Trump Republicans also mocked the mistake, saying, “Trump’s White House confused the country of Colombia with Columbia University,” followed by a clown emoji.
Jeff Stein, an economics reporter for *The Washington Post*, added, “I know Barron Trump is going to NYU, but this feels like a bit much.”
Former Trump campaign aide A.J. Delgado expressed her frustration, saying, “Did the White House really misspell Colombia? I remember fixing basic mistakes like this in 2016, but this is embarrassing. Only the most clueless people are working there now.”
An internet personality, Three Year Letterman, joked, “I can’t top this.”
A Trump lie tracker account sarcastically clarified the error: “Columbia is a university in New York. Colombia is the country Trump threatened today. But sure, let’s talk about how ‘competence’ is back in the White House.”
Democratic National Committee delegate Christopher Hale also criticized White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, pointing out her reported campaign finance issues and saying, “She can’t even spell Colombia correctly.”
