Ukraine LIVE: Zelensky slaps down Donald Trump as he refuses two demands

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has set two major “red lines” that he refuses to cross in any future peace deal with Russia, and one of them directly contradicts the stance of the Donald Trump administration. During peace talks held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Ukraine’s delegation made it clear to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio that Kyiv would not accept limits on the size of its military or restrictions on its ability to join international organizations, including NATO and the European Union.

Sources close to the talks revealed that Ukraine’s position is firm: there can be no restrictions on the size of its defense forces, and no prohibitions on its participation in international organizations. Andriy Yermak, Zelensky’s Chief of Staff, emphasized that Russia must not have any veto power over Ukraine’s decisions, particularly regarding NATO membership. This stance directly challenges the Trump administration’s position, as US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated in February that NATO membership for Ukraine is not a realistic outcome of any negotiated settlement.

Zelensky’s red lines highlight Ukraine’s determination to maintain its sovereignty and pursue integration with Western institutions, even as it seeks a resolution to the ongoing conflict with Russia. The disagreement over NATO membership underscores the complexities of the peace process and the differing priorities of Ukraine and the US under the Trump administration. While Ukraine views NATO membership as a critical security guarantee, the US appears to be more cautious, potentially prioritizing a deal that appeases Russia over Ukraine’s aspirations.

This tension could complicate future negotiations, as Ukraine remains steadfast in its commitment to joining NATO and other Western alliances, despite pressure from both Russia and some US officials. Zelensky’s unwavering stance reflects the broader struggle for Ukraine’s independence and its desire to align with democratic institutions, even in the face of significant geopolitical challenges.
