Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke at London Stansted Airport after meeting with European and world leaders, including UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, and having tea with King Charles at Sandringham.
During a press conference in Kyiv, Zelensky said he would step down as president under one condition. He stated that he would be willing to leave his position if it meant Ukraine could join NATO, emphasizing that his country’s freedom is “not for sale.
Despite pressure from Donald Trump’s administration and a tense meeting at the White House, he reaffirmed his commitment to leading Ukraine but said, “I am exchangeable for NATO.” He explained that if stepping down secured NATO membership, it would mean he had completed his mission.
Zelensky, a former actor turned politician, has long pushed for Ukraine to join NATO, believing it would provide stronger protection against Russia. However, Russian President Vladimir Putin has strongly opposed Ukraine’s NATO membership, warning of severe consequences if it happens.
When asked about reports that the UK and France are calling for a one-month ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia, Zelensky simply said, “I’m aware of everything.”
Regarding the Trump administration, Zelensky confirmed that communication is still ongoing but “not at my level.” He refused to apologize for how discussions fell apart with Trump and Vice President JD Vance. When asked about a minerals deal that was at the center of the dispute, he confirmed that Ukraine was “ready to sign it.”
Zelensky also stressed that any security agreements must completely eliminate the possibility of Russia attacking Ukraine again. He rejected the idea of a simple ceasefire, calling it a “trap” unless it comes with solid guarantees. He warned that without a strong agreement, Russia would likely break the ceasefire, leading to another conflict.
