FRESNO, Calif. (TCD) — A 22-year-old father will spend 55 years to life in prison for killing his girlfriend and dismembering her body this year.
Judge Mark Cullers handed down Cameron Wright’s sentence July 19 for the first-degree murder of Samantha Sharp, the Fresno County District Attorney’s Office announced. He previously pleaded guilty in May.
On Jan. 9, the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office received a report that Wright claimed to have “killed his girlfriend, dismembered her body, and spread her remains throughout different locations in the county.” Deputies then responded to the 8300 block of South Hayes Avenue, where they made contact with Wright.
Officials reportedly found evidence corroborating the allegations and later discovered Sharp’s remains in an orchard approximately 2 miles away.
According to KFSN-TV, Sharp’s cousin was present during the sentencing and asked Wright, “Did she beg you to stop? Did she cry in agony for her mom? Did she beg you for her life? What were her last words? How long did she suffer?”
During the sentencing, Wright reportedly apologized to Sharp’s family and said he was on methamphetamine when he killed her.
KFSN reports that Judge Cullers said in court, “Not many people high on methamphetamine deliberate on killing the mother of their children, go ahead and kill the mother of their children.”
Wright and Sharp reportedly share a 7-month-old son, who is now in the custody of Sharp’s family.
