Donald Trump shares urgent message to Canadians about ‘51st state’ as voting begins in crucial election

Donald Trump has often talked about the idea of Canada becoming America’s 51st state. Now, as Canadians head to the polls for a very important election, Trump has shared an urgent message directed at them through his platform, Truth Social.
Mark Carney, who became Canada’s prime minister just six weeks ago after replacing Justin Trudeau, is now facing off against Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre in this crucial vote. Not long ago, Poilievre’s party had a huge 25-point lead in the polls. But since Carney took over leadership of the Liberal Party, he has managed to close the gap, making the election extremely close. Right now, it’s too difficult to predict who will win.
Many believe that Trump’s influence, sometimes called the “Trump effect,” could actually play a big role in the outcome. Trump, who is the 47th President of the United States, had previously placed tariffs on Canadian goods. However, he said Canada could avoid all tariffs if it simply became the “cherished 51st state” of the U.S.
Speaking about his vision, Trump said that if Canada joined the U.S., it would become “one of the greatest states anywhere.” He also added that visually, the U.S. and Canada would form “the most incredible country.” Trump argued that the division between the two nations was unnatural, created by someone simply drawing an “artificial line” through the land many years ago.
Trying to sweeten the offer, Trump promised that Canada could keep its national anthem, “O Canada,” even if it became part of the United States. He said he loved the anthem and thought it was great, insisting it could remain as a state anthem in what he called “maybe our greatest state.”
As Canadians vote today, April 28, Trump posted a direct message encouraging them to vote for change. In his post, he wished Canadians good luck and urged them to elect someone strong and wise enough to lower taxes by half, massively strengthen their military, and make Canadian industries like car manufacturing, steel, aluminum, lumber, and energy grow four times bigger. Trump said this could happen “with zero tariffs or taxes” — but only if Canada became the 51st U.S. state.
He emphasized that without a border separating the two countries, the land would look beautiful and that there would be “all positives with no negatives.” Trump insisted that America could no longer afford to “subsidize” Canada by spending hundreds of billions of dollars every year unless Canada officially joined the United States.
Pierre Poilievre quickly responded to Trump’s comments, telling the U.S. president to stay out of Canadian politics. He made it clear that only Canadians would decide Canada’s future at the ballot box, not outsiders. Poilievre strongly rejected Trump’s idea, saying that Canada would always remain proud, sovereign, and independent, and would never become the 51st U.S. state. He encouraged Canadians to vote for change so Canada could stand stronger and deal with America on its own terms.
As of now, Mark Carney has not commented on Trump’s statements.
